Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20hey folks clicking here and welcome to aguide to Kerbal space program forcomplete beginners I've done a lot oflet's play series for KSP but I haven'tdone a just a simple just very basictutorial before and I've had a lot ofpeople request something like that sothe goal of this series of videos isgoing to be a really sort of in-depthstep-by-step explanation of how to playWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40Kerbal space program we're going to getyou to at least the point where you canget into orbit around the planet nowKerbal does have some quite excellenttutorials built into the game here intraining and then we'll teach you a fairamount of stuff but you know some peoplelearn better in different ways and maybethe training scenarios weren't ideal foryou so that's what we're going to beWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00looking at over here I am running onversion 1.3 if you are playing on afuture version almost certainlyeverything we're going to talk abouthere will still apply I'm going to beplaying with no mods for this tutorialthere are a few that we can definitelyrecommend I've got a video onlinealready for recommendations but perhapsI'll do another updated version of thatat the end of this tutorial series overWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20here and at the end of this tutorialseries if you want to know more I woulddefinitely recommend that you followalong with some actual Let's Plays whichwon't be quite as detailed but we'll geta lot more stuff done a lot faster let'sgo ahead and start in you your veryfirst thing you're going to do when youstart the new game is you're have togive a name to your save it can beliterally anything here so we're justgoing to call this one I don't know ifI'll call this one WowWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40typing is hard guide over here there arethree game modes over here we're goingto be playing in career in which youhave to manage both your funds and yourscience to get ahead it is the mostcomplete version and it's quite a lot offun and the thing is it actually does apretty good job of sort of building upWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00the resources you have over time so thatyou start off very simple and addcomplexity going forward on the flipside is sandbox mode which starts youoff with absolutely everything unlockedyou don't have to worry about money youdon't worry about science but it beingbe quite confusing because you've got somany parts to play with I also reallylike the idea of sort of building yourway up science is kind of in the middleWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20where you don't have to worry aboutmoney but you do have to collect scienceso we're going to be starting a careerright over here if I can click it theflag over here you can choose whateveryou liked that looks right well Stevekeep the the default flag in here forfor this particular tutorial you canso choose your difficulty options overhere I'm going to leave it on normalwhich is perfectly fine you've got fourpreset difficulties over hereWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40you've also got the ability to tuneindividual sliders if you want somethingcustom there's also the Advanced tabover here so there's a lot of ability tomake some changes one of the things tonote about normal difficulty is you seethis option over here missing crewsrespawn that means that there is goingto be a certain series of kerbals youractual astronauts that if theyWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00quote-unquote died on the mission theydon't really die they just go missingfor a little while and then they'll comeback later on so it means it's a lotless punishing if something goesterribly wrong it will take advantage ofthat in our tutorial anyway with thatI'm just going to go ahead and hit startso we're just going to wait for a momentto load and I mean there'll be a few popups here like this gene current says hito us over here how's it going gives youWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20a few introductions to do some controlswe can say thanks I've got it the basiccontrols that work on most screens ifyou hold down the right mouse button youcan rotate your view around if you useyour middle mouse wheel to scroll in andout you can do that we can use the arrowkeys here to move our camera a littlebit this doesn't come up quite as oftennow what you're looking at here is theWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40Kerbal space center this is where you'regoing to research build and launch allof your spaceships from there are aseries of different buildings over herethat you can interact with that dodifferent things now it can be somehowit's sometimes hard to know what theyall are like to spot them all forexample the very important missioncontrol over here and sometimes got toWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00be hard to see back there now over onthe left hand side of the screen thoughthere is a button linked to every singleone of these buildings so it's wellworth just mousing over these until youyou kind of got a good idea of whatyou're looking for over here they all doa variety of things some are far lessimportant than others for example theadministration building over hereWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20there's a definite chance that you mightnot interact with it at allit lets you set certain policies to letyou chain exchange money for morescience and vice versa and play withreputation they're basically threeresources that you have at your disposalreplications not really something you'regoing to think about at all the bigresources are going to be some money andespecially science over here so theseWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40are there's a few things we are going togo through these we're going to fightand see them organically as thecome up I will tell you this for yourvery first start what you're going towant to do right away is you're going towant to click on Mission Control whichis this building over here or you canjust click on it from right over herethe reason Mission Control is soimportant is because Mission Control isWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00what gives you your well your missionsyour contracts for jobs now you don'thave to actively pursue contracts theseare in a sense optional but the reasonyou're going to want to do them isbecause these missions will give youmoney and it is really the onlysignificant way to make money in KerbalWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20space program so while you're not trulyforced to do contracts really you'regoing to want to do them just to raisefunds so the funds will be used to buildyour spaceships and more importantly toupgrade your Space Center your SpaceCenter starts with a bunch of like justlevel 1 buildings but to do biggerfancier stuff you're going to have toupgrade them to bigger buildings andthat takes up a lot of money the reallyWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40nice thing about contracts though isthat they really give you context forwhat you're going to want to do at thestart of the game you're going to havethese four contracts to choose from andthese are really sort of like the basestory the base development the main kindof campaign of Kerbal space program itgives you an order that makes sense thatyou might want to do things in andcertainly it makes a lot of sense for usWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00to grab those now so we currently canhave a maximum of two contracts in playat the start of the game we'll be ableto get more later on as we upgradeMission Control so we're going to pick acouple the star rating here sort of kindof indicates difficulty as we'll seelater on it's not really the clearestexample there's going to be things thatare one-star that are actually quiteWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20tricky to do and things that arethree-star that will ultimately becomevery very simple and straightforwardorbiting orbiting kerbin irving's ourplanet by late first effectively um is abig challenge at first but very quicklystops being a challenge once you youknow unlock some things and get betterat the game orbiting kerbin becomes justas easy as riding a bicycle so we areWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40going to start at the top though so thisfirst very first mission is to gatherscientific data from kerbin you've got abriefing over here with some backstoryand it's a really funny little text overhere if you want to read it the prestigeis linked to the sort of start ratingand how much reputation might get fromit prestige is notyou have to pay attention to theWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00expiration this is the expiration datefor when the contract is offered thiscontract once you accept it by hittingthe green check mark it does not have anexpiration dateonce you accept it basically you'llsometimes see a duration as a secondvalue over here so the expires in fivedays duration four years or somethingWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20like that that second one is how muchtime you have to actually complete thecontract the first date here theexpiration is simply how long you haveto take you have to accept it so weactually have no real time pressure forcompleting this contract simply foraccepting it now we're going to skipdown to the bottom over here and see therewards so the advance here is how muchWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40money you'll get simply for acceptingthis contract and then this is thereward for completing the contract thismany Kerbal bucks this is your money alittle bit of science and then a littlebit of replication again reputation youdon't have to worry about at all it'sreally about the money and the sciencebut not only that under objectives thereWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00will be one or more objectives for youto accomplish a part as part of thiscontract and quite frequently you willget a reward for completing theindividual objectives and that'sactually what's happening here eventhough there's only one objective thereis a reward for completing this oneobjective which is to recover ortransmit any science experiment dataWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20from kerbin that's our planet to achievethis goal so when we complete this stepwe're going to get 6,400 Kerbal bucksand a science and then that will ofcourse complete the entire contractwhich will get us the completion rewardso truly this contract is going to giveus a couple of thousand bucks upfrontand about ten thousand bucks forcompleting the whole thing which is kindWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40of nice at this point so we're going togo ahead and accept that because it'svery easy to achieve this way then we'regoing to pick the next contract overhere which is simply to launch our firstvessel as a very similar structure tothe other one all we have to do tocomplete this is to launch our firstvessel off the launch pad or one rightwe just have to we have to leave theground that's it basically so we'reWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00going to go ahead and accept thatcontract as well and then work ourmaximum so I can't actually clickanother button right now but that's okaywe can check our active contracts hereand if we've completed any contracts wecan check it in the arcso we're going to go ahead and leavethis facility then what we're going todo is we're going to build our veryfirst vessel and for that we're going toenter the building that you willWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20probably be spending the most amount oftime in in fact there's no doubt youwill spend the majority of your timethat's on the ground will be spent inthe Vehicle Assembly Building and therest of your time will mostly be spenton the actual mission piloting your shipso the Vehicle Assembly Building overhere is where you actually build aspaceship we're going to get Wernher vonKermit saying hi to us over here give usWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40a little bit of an intro that's goodmost of the things are kind of lockeddown currently we can't I'm trying toright-click and turn the screen I can'tI can't zoom in or out there's nothingto do these buttons over here don't doanything right now you can't really doanything on the screen until you've gotat least one part down which is what ishappening on the left hand side of thescreen these are all the parts that youWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00have available to you to build yourspaceship they're divided in categoriesso this is the pods category whichcurrently only has the mark one commandpod next would be the fuel tank categorywhich is currently emptynext is the engine category which hasone item and so on and so forth thesewill fill up with many many many itemsas you go forward some of theseWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20categories will have dozens of things inthem that's one of the things if you doload up sandbox mode is why I was sayingit's a little bit overwhelming becauseit will just be crazy full with stufffor a very first mission what I want todo and this is not this is not requiredbut this is going to be a good way tosort of introduce you to things we aregoing to go and go with a single commandpod alone for our first mission becauseWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40it's going to teach us a couple ofinteresting concepts first of all oh Ididn't mean to point out when you'relooking at these parts many of the partslike down here will be grayed out and ifyou click on them nothing will happenthe game requires you that you startyour ship with certain types ofcomponents usually one of the commandpodsalthough apparently we could also startWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00with just one of these solid boosters aswell this would be allowed we're goingto start by clicking on the command podover here right then we're just going tosingle click on it and there it is sothis is our command pod now that I'vegot one in here I can rotate around withthe right mouse button I can scroll withthe mouse wheel to go up and down inthis view the mouse wheel doesn't zoomalthough if you hold shift then mouseWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20wheel then you canand at that point so there this is ourspaceship over here there's going to beour entire vessel just a simple tin cannow you may have noticed when we mouseover this component there was a lot ofinformation here you don't have to worryabout reading most of it right now it isworth noting you can right-click on thisto sort of pin it down there oopsWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40which will then allow you to say scrollthis list this mark one command pod hasa lot of stuff going on it's a veryimportant component it's where yourKerbal will live and you can tell thatbecause it's got a crew capacity of oneI should say this also might be whereyour Kerbal dies but that's let's ignorethat for now got a crew capacity of oneso a Kerbal will be sitting inside ofWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00this box it's got a weight it's cut as0.84 tons it's got some other specs indifferent things it's also going to costdown here it costs us 600 Kerbal bucksto to have this component as part of ourship and in fact if we go and built downhere this is the total cost of ourWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20spaceship right now our whole vesselcost us 600 bucks it's only got one onepart in it so that makes sense now atthe bottom here we can see our totalmoney so this is really not going tocost us very much now that we've got apart here this button has also lit upthis crew button this allows us to seewho's sitting in the mark 1 command podyou can change which Kerbal getsassigned to it by moving things aroundWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40like that ok for this mission it doesn'tmatter who we use there are really thereare three different types of kerbalsthere are pilots scientists andengineers we'll look at what they dolater on you can you can mouse over themfind out some information the engineerdoes something about resource converterefficiency and drill efficiency theWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00scientist does something about vesselscience return and resetting experimentswe don't know what that means yet we'regoing to find out soon and the pilotsallow us to have stability assist andfull vessel control without ComNetaccess what it means is until you unlessyou start doing you know certain sort ofWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20not cheesy but kind of mean maxy kind ofworking the system kind of things youreally do want a pilot to be wellpiloting your vessel as much as possibleso we're going to leave valentin andthere doesn't matter who we use otherthan their class their type pilotengineer scientists allkerbals are exactly the same exactly thesame and we'll talk about that againWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40when we look at the astronaut center sowe're gonna click back on build overhere and confirm yeah I am going to gojust with this which is under kill forthis mission we can do a little bit moreon our first go but that's okay wellname a craft a so it's a tin can and wejust made out of paper thin aloo mininumWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00you know just flavor Texas you can givethis mission a different flag from yourmain flag as well tell you what this isgoing to be engineered by curb dineindustries over here so it's going tohave a different flag matter its itsflavor and you can save this if you wantit is worth noting that if you do goahead and launch the game Auto savesWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20your your latest design it's always gotthe one slot that it auto saves whateveryour latest vessel is in but you couldgo ahead and hit save and then later onif you hit open you'll be able to seehey there's our tin can over here onepart one stage 600 bucks will justcancel that so we've got our little tincan over here so we're going to go aheadand hit the green button over on the topright corner over here that says launchWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40and we're going to launch our very firstmission it's not going to do much butit's going to show us a few veryimportant basics of the game so we'regoing to go ahead and mouse in hereagain you can right click to rotatearound and you can mouse wheel to zoombut here we are we're sitting on thelaunch padthere's the Vehicle Assembly Buildingwhere we're just building things but weare currently running a mission rightWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00now at the top we can see our currentelevation this is above sea levelwe are 67 meters above sea level overhere actually if we turn over this wayand zoom out we can actually see theocean over there so it's just a littlebit of a hill we're just slightly abovesea level over here this elevationnumber is actually from the center pointof your vessel as well so if you havemore components hereWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20the number might be slightly differentbut I get to start it off so there's abunch of other things notice whenever Imouse over here we get a couple of otherbuttons we can return to the SpaceCenter and we can recover the vesselover here we'll be using these buttonsvery shortly over the top left we've gotcertain time and if we mouse over thiswe get this sort of time warp buttonwe'll look at that later on as wellthere's a bunch of other things going ondown at the bottom right we can see allWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40the kerbals that are in this missionwell we have one seat and one kerbalsthere there's valentina Kerman it is acouple more buttons on there that we'lllook at in just a moment actuallyat the bottom of the screen we've gotour nav ball this shows us what ourcurrent sort of I don't know heading isis the correct term here since we're notactually moving but where we areWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00pointing right now okaythe this nav ball represents it to thehorizon and the middle dot here is wherewe're pointing we're pointing straightup at the sky right now which is whythis is all blue over on the bottom leftthere's going to be a few differentthings here but notice it's got the rollyaw and pitch this these are your threecontrols for turning your ship and theWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19neat thing is even though we don't haveany engines or anything like this on ourcurrent vessel inside this commandmodule are these things called reactionwheels basically like big gyroscopestype things which allow this to rotateif we use our controls and we can dothat right now the controls for rotatingyour ship are WASD right so the air notWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40the arrow keys but WASD as well as Q andE on your keyboard so if take a look atthe pitch me tour here I'm just going totap W you see how the pitch changes andif I tap s it changes the other way andif I do a it's the yaw and D is you ownthe other way and Q and E is roll soWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00we've got those meters but you're notreally going to be looking at thesemeters mostly going to be looking at theship so let's do this again I'm going tohit W I'm going to hold it a little bitlonger here you see this it doesn'tmatter which way the camera is facingbecause what you're doing is you'reyou're you're pitching in the samedirection you can actually see themovement on the nav ball and everythingif I hold it a little bit longer we canactually kick our whole vessel over andWatch at: 17:00 / 17:20then if we say use Q and E here we canrotate around woo and get quite a lot ofspeed going on here let's see if I cantip it back onto its stomach and then ifI use the Yaquis which are a and B wecan actually well I'm try not to go toohard because it's possible that we canget this thing spinning so much that itWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40might smash itself and and that's okayif something goes terribly terriblywrong if we hit escape one of the thingswe can do I mean first of all we cansave our game we can load from a savethat's fine we can go back to the spacecenter of the tracking station thatwouldn't change our mission would stillbe operational we hit this will look atthat in a second but two of the thingsthat will be kind of handy for you orWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00one of the things that would be reallyhandy for you here is revertthis will allow you to revert basicallyback to an autosave that happened whenwe initially launched quote-unquotelaunched our ship iearrived the launch pad so if anythinggoes terribly wrong you can alwaysrevert back to being on the launch pador in fact revert back to being insidethe Vehicle Assembly Building the sameWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20option will present itself if you crashand explode but you don't have to revertyou to just keep going anyway now wehave a mission here to do science and wecan confirm that if we go over to topright corner we've got a few littleicons over here that do different thingsit shows us our current money reputationand science the top one shows us alertsWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40which we'll see in just a moment thisfuel tank here shows us our currentresources on our ship we have electriccharge and mono propellant we'll belooking at those things later on andthis one here shows us our contracts wecan confirm we have two contracts gatherscientific data from kerbin and launchour first vessel now we're not gonna beable to launch our first vessel herebecause what we don't have we don't havean engine OhWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00notice that this thing is stuck open ifyou click on one of these buttons so ifyou just mouse over and mouse off itgoes away if you click on one of them itstickies them and stays open so we'rejust going to go and dismiss that overthere we can run a scientific experimentright now we are going to need signs sothat we can unlock more parts makingdoing science is one of the mostimportant things you can do in KerbalWatch at: 19:00 / 19:20space program here you get a little tinybit of science from doing science hereon the surface and you get a lot morescience from doing science in space andeven more so if you can land on someother celestial body like the moon oreven another planet so how do we doscience well if you right-click on justabout any part in Kerbal space programWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40you're going to get some kind of pop-upwindow now the mark 1 command pod herehas a lot going on as such it has arelatively complex little pop-up menuwe're not going to be dealing with mostof these almost ever actually they'revery rare that you mess with most ofthese buttons but you've got someoptions you know toggle some lights heylook at that I've got a light on howWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00cool is that we could rename the vesseland so on and so forth but we're goingto look down at the bottom thing overhere which is the crew report this isone form of science we can do we can askValentina here to fill out a form from 1to 5 how would you rate the 10you're inside of the command pod fromone to five how comfortable is yourWatch at: 20:00 / 20:20chair and so on and so forth so we canget her to fill out this little surveyso that we can know how good things aregoing so that's what happens when Iclick to report I get this little crewreport window that comes up to reportfrom launchpad you record the crew'sassessment of the situation now what'skind of interesting a lot of theseexperiments are tied to particularWatch at: 20:20 / 20:40locations this is the crew report thatyou get from the launchpad we're goingto get the science from this we're goingto get 1.5 science from this scienceexperiment how much you may experimentbut it's still there we we technicallycan repeat this experiment on thelaunchpad but we will no longer getscience from it in the future you onlyget science from most experiments onetime however we can get science from aWatch at: 20:40 / 21:00career port again if we do it somewhereelse so we did this one from thelaunchpad if we were sitting on thegraphs over there that would count assomething else if we were floating inthe ocean over there that would count assomething else if we were off the groundthat would count as something else ifwe're in space that's another one and soon and so forth so for now we're justgoing to go in ahead keep this reportWatch at: 21:00 / 21:20there are three buttons on the screenthe reset experiment just basicallytosses it outso does nothing so we're just going tohit the crew report again because wereally do want the crew report the oneon the bottom lets us transmit the dataif we had an antenna on this we would beable to say I know scan a copy of theWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40form valentina filled out and we wouldbe able to email that back to thecommand center and we would be able tobook this science this 1.5 science we'dbe able to lock it in remotely howeverwe don't have an antenna on here so wecannot do it however we can use thethird and final option here keepexperiment which will simply we're goingto fill out the form we're going to putit under the seat in the command moduleWatch at: 21:40 / 22:00and just save it there we can alwaysright-click on this and review thereport again this is the existing reportyep still there that's great if we tryto run another crew report we're goingto get this thing it says overwrite crewreport you can only have one copy of anyone experiment stored in your commandmodule at any given time unless they'reWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20different from one another you can storemore than one crew report that's alittle fuzzier we're going to get intothat later okayso you can store multiple differentexperiments in your capsulebut only one unique one in the currentsetup that it is based on the biome thatyou're in which is a launch padsorry that's a little more complicatedthan I wanted to right now anyway we'redone this is going to be our very firstWatch at: 22:20 / 22:40our first mission we got a little bit ofscience we are now going to recover thevessel so we just went and we brought itback into the garage over here and weget our rewards first of all we get somescience over here right so we got ourscience because we got our crew reportfrom the launch pad that was worth 1.5Watch at: 22:40 / 23:00science we also apparently got somebonus signs here recovery of a vesselthat survived a flight that's worth fivescience by itself as well the first timeokay technically our flight was usrolling around on the launch pad butdon't tell anyone that's going to countas a flight so we earn six point fivescience we actually have eight pointWatch at: 23:00 / 23:20five signs in total because we alsocompleted our very first mission we'lllook at that in a second if we hit nextit'll go to the parks tab we recoveredall 600 funds for our mission we didn'twe didn't even get a scratch on ourcommand module therefore we got back allof the money for our mission which isgreat and hit next again we'll find outthe Valentina has earned one experienceWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40point that's not enough for her to levelup she's still a level of zero pilot buthopefully relatively soon we'll get amore experienced you get experience fordoing different thingsValentina will not get any moreexperience for doing another mission onon kerbin itself so the only way for herto get more experience again is for herto go into orbit down at the bottomWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00right corner of the screen you see thislittle alert icon if this three if Imouse over it shows three little itemsthis is to let us know that we havecompleted our contract and a few otherthings you can we can cycle throughthese we find out that we've gotten somemilestones have been achieved werecovered our first crew from a missionyet we totally recovered Valentinaperfectly fine we also performed ourWatch at: 24:00 / 24:20first experiments at home so thesemilestones will give you bonus money andreputationwe completed one of the contractobjectives which was to gatherscientific data from kerbin andfurthermore that completed the contractas well so we can go ahead and justtrash these messages we don't need themaround anymore they're just going tolitter up our alert little box if weleft them thereWatch at: 24:20 / 24:40so we completed our very first contractwe want to follow this up by completingthe next contract which is to actuallylaunch our first ship into well justlaunch it at all because we haven'tactually done the launch yet that's whatwe're going to be doing next time nexttime we'll also be looking at anotherscience experiment that we can actuallyWatch at: 24:40 / 25:00run on our vesselso hopefully this the pacing for thisvideo is is good if you do want thingsto go a little bit faster you can alwayswish watch a let's play but we're goingto try to keep going with a lot of extradetail in here as we launch our veryfirst vessel in the next episode thanksfor watching folks see you next time

  1. Since this seems like a game that involves science, it should be native to linux as well. I hope I do not have to use Macrosoftshit (yes, i do mean Microsoft is indeed a large hardly intact log of feces)

  2. The training levels was so unintuitive it mad you want to punch baby koalas. could never figure out how they wanted that RVS thruster installed put it every where on that rocket.

  3. I got the game last year on steam sale, played through all the training modes and also unlocked some beginner stuff in the campaign mode, but then, I left the game till now. This video series is good recap. Thanks.

  4. I thought I had FINALLY found a TRUE BEGINNER'S tutorial, until he says click on mission control. Well… When I did, it said "closed", thereby relegating this video to the already huge list of useless videos.
