Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20hi everyonerescue and I want to talk abouttalk about the bat the myths surroundingguinea pig bats so a lot of people thinkthat it's really bad for a guinea pig toWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40have a bath but let me ask you this ifyou have a dog do you bathe your dog I'msure you do and guinea pigs need bathsfor just the same reason as dogs itactually keeps them healthy so some ofthe myths I've heard is that guinea pigsget ear infections they get upperrespiratory Ziff you give them bathsbecause the water will go in their earWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00and your nose and that's really bad itlowers their immune system if you givethem a bath where so they can actuallybecome very susceptible for mites wellin fact it's actually the opposite so Ireally think it's super important to getthat information out there that guineapigs need baths to stay healthy and youWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20can totally tell you see a guinea pigthat has never had a bath who's aroundthree years old or so that's when youreally notice it you will see that thefur is just kind of clumpy and a littlebit of greasy and you know and probablyyou won't even see the no differenceuntil you've given your guinea pig abath and then you're like oh my gosh itlooks so lovely it's just feels so cleanWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40and soft and so definitely guinea pigsme need a bath now do they like it nothey really don't but your dog doesn'teither right here and little kids don'tlike it either but they have to do inorder to stay healthy they really reallydo so we recommend doing it about threeWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00four times a year and then right beforethe bath what we always do and you'reSpencer actually Spencer's gonna get hisbath today I'm gonna do his bath todayand what we do before the bath we do alittle grooming so we do denounce Ithought my clippers ready here these arethe lovely green Bell clippers andthere's a there is actually a link toWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20all this stuff that we have here that weuse at the rescue right below the videoso we use the Clippers we use a littlebit of olive oil and q-tips for the earswe do like a little boy cleaning sincehe is a boy need that for that as wellWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40we this is a shampoo that we like to usethis is an antifungal animal shampoo petshampoo and the reason that we use thisone is because guinea pigs are superprone to get fungal infections veryprone super common for guinea pigs toget that so they carried a sports withWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00them you know and sometimes when they'relittle stressed or for whatever reasonit can get the over hand and all of asudden become an infection and theproblem so this is why I'm all aboutprevention and this shampoo preventsthat and that is why it is and it'sreally nice when you're using it it'ssuper soft I just love it I just love itand then you know we just use a cheapWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20people conditioner as well and yesguinea pig skin conditioner and this isalso I love it because it just it justadds that little extra touch earlier alot of people askthe reasons that they've heard why theydon't give their game pics about becauseit can dry out their skin oh yes yesWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40no doesn't you don't even doing it ifyou're doing it every week or everyother week then of course if that is notvery good if you do with that autumn butyou're only gonna do it three or fourtimes a year you're not gonna dry outtheir skin no they do sometimes comehere with very flaky flaky fur yes thatmeans that they need a bath actuallyWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00that means that they need a bath becausethat is it's fairly common that they canhave a little you know Blakey's skinit's almost like a dandruff actuallywhich can be caused by you know andpeople to buy kind of a fungus as wellso in you know what we do instead ofthis shampoo we use anti dandruffWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20shampoo as well with the guinea pigsthat is also a great preventivepreventive shampoo for ringworm as wellso yeah the skin flakes you're justgonna rinse them out in the in the bathprocess so and we're going to show atthat process look like an amateur heWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40fights me really hard than I might lookI might look silly so you're gonna begood boy for me okay yeah but then againif he is kind of dude that's actuallyprobably good people can really see howI deal with the PG that's really toughto bathe actually rather than one that'ssuper easy to do so let's start withWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00this and real quick and then we'll go onto the bath so do you recommend clippingyour nails before or after the bathbefore I like doing all of it before andwhat we do is feel so he actually justhad his nails he's done so there's notmuch to clip here what we do is theolive oil in the ears to get all thegunk out and I especially this one IWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20want to do before it about because it'sa little oilyso you want to then shampoo it outduring the bath so that you don't havethat oilywhat are you talking about Spence whatare you saying buddy I also wanted tobring up a big question that we getoften the grease gland that they have ontheir bottom yeah how'd you clean thatWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40that is a big one now yeah that is a bigone so look at his you can see it it isa little dirty you can see this residuethat's kind of stuck in the hair andthis is feels greasy super greasy it'slike an oily gland that voice half andWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00girls have it too but you usually don'treally see anything every now and thenI'll see you girl that has a little bitof what are you smelling over therebuddy it's like burden bearing up stormso often if it's really bad what I liketo do is I like to trim it off just atrim I give you like a saskia but cut IWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20just trim it a lot because it's sogreasy that it's it's almost impossibleto wash it off there's no shampoo that'sgood enough we use something calledgroomers goop which it's not here we dohave it but the link will be also we canshow it when we could do a best yeahexactly and that that does do a bit of aWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40good job but it's either way it stops soI'm still all for doing a lot of cuttingand cutting it off so like lithium forinstance to not make him look silly Iwould leave this longer and then I wouldjust put this so that it then falls overso he doesn't look like you know like asilly naked but so yeah all right kidWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00die finish your nails to districtedtalking okay let's go my gloves werequick so this is a pre bath stop nowafter the bath what is also a good timeto do is to do your ivermectinpreventative and ivermectinWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20you can either again a little bottlelike this or you can get a horse murmurpaste that contains ivermectin so theseare both as effective and what you needthis is cheap this is only about seveneight bucks maybe and what you need isjust a pea-sized amount of this thatwill go in the mouth directly in theWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40mouth so you just put a little bityou're on your finger a little pea-sizedamount you just gotta put it in likethat and this one goes on the ear it'sjust a little drop on the ear how oftendo you have to put every three months sowhenever you do the bath do thepreventive as well because you're gonnado the anti fungal preventative withWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00your back so just just you know time itaround the same time so you do it likethat okay buddy let's see now he's aTeddy so Teddy's usually have a littlebit of a dirtier drier ear brother notdirty dry with a lot of kind of dry skinWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20pieces that are easier to remove with alittle bit of olive oil I kind of rub itin like this you take it out now you'renot going inside the inner ear canal atall we're totally not going there youWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40are just doing all these little crevicesin the ear really kind of cleaning itout so and then when your q-tip comes upclean that is when you can turn him overto the other side now you want to putWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00the olive oil before you start puttingthe q-tip in to help loosen it rightthat's right yeah cuz it's that dry skinthat is hard to remove if you just tryit without anything with any oil it'sjust almost impossible to remove so theWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20oil just makes it much easier to take itall outno this isn't ear wax right nodisrespect should be a dry skin yes dryskin cell so in most guinea pigs heavenand what is interesting is that it isthe color of the skin of yeah of the ofthe ear so he is see how it matches soWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40with the dark guinea pig who is a darklike a black ear you kind of find thatit's like totally black that comes outso that's interesting I thought I'dmention that okay let's do your boylet's do your boy chat buddy let's doyour little boy check you're being verygood boy he blends right into your hairWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00okay there's your pocket I always wantto say it and so people understand thisis the anus that is not the pocket thisis the pocket so when people see thesethey think I'm sticking a q-tip q-tipright here but I'm not this is this isWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20the pocket that you want to clean outyou just nibbled me I I don't I don'tblame me buddy I know I don't believefor people saying that cleaning your boyguinea pigs like this is also unhealthyfor them or it's a little uncomfortablebut it's definitely not unhealthy do youwant to clean this out and this is theWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40best way to do it so we're rolling himlike this I have this hand free to kindof scoop out what's in there and thenwhen they struggle like he does I justvery gently do it again I don't forcehim I just really gently and headthey'll let little let you do it in yetand then what I do to get a little moreWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00leverage if I go down it makes it alittle easier as well so let's checkyour little little weenus buddy a littlebit you want to clean that I'd also wantto just press a little bit till I seeWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20the two little prongs come out becauseif there's anything else stuck in thearetha it'll come out as well so thereput it awaygood boy okay now you want to open yourmouth and breathe through your mouthwhen you're doing this particular partbecause it's a little stinkyall righty so I think we're ready forWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40that let's do ityou think Spencer are you ready for thatI don't think he agrees all right let'sget ready for that bath okay this isWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00what needs to happen so obviously thewater is nice you look warm temperatureI'm using a dog ball you can use alittle bucket or you know anything atallC is struggling which is fineand see how I'm holding him actually forthis part I'm always holding them likeWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20this with that little paw right inbetween the fingers that really helps alot in maintaining your grip on him andhe will feel a little more secure aswell so what I first want to do is makesure he's nice and and wet everywherebefore I put on the shampoo so did youalready pour some shampoo in that wateryes I did thank you for reminding meWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40you really Rock I did put a littleshampoo already because it's it'salready starting to work its kind offungal killing properties and if yourguinea pig has ringworm you want to letthem kind of you know soak a little bitsoak a little longer yes and I have aWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00really good video of showing how tobathe a guinea pig that has really badringworm okay so let's put on theshampoos so you're always holding himbut yeah it is key because if not hewill want to jump out it's like you knowyou can sometimes have a guinea pig thatWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20doesn't mind but usually they do andthey're waiting for an opportunity to goand jump you're being a very good boyyes you are now what I like to do isactually put like a little shampoo herethen I can then use to take just aWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40little bit for underneath the chin ontop of the nose II because you do wantto get that shampoo everywhere and youyes you have to wash their little facesjust being really careful around the eyeand you want to just measure the earsright yeah exactly but you will watch meWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00in a little bit when I do the totalclean rinse off you'll see that Iactually will have quite a bit of waterthat will actually go up here to rinseit off and it's totally fineoh thank you very much so now I need alittle more from this belly over here soWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20this is kind of where you hold them inthe air a little bit when you're doingthis part and the way cannot getscratched it's just to make sure thatthese back legs I'm not getting anywherenear your new your arms because peopleWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40get scratched real badly like this withfading stuff with bathing and I used to- my I was always covered in scratchesuntil I got lice and I'd have wait asecond if I just figure out a way tohold them without them being able toreach my skin than with those back legsI think I'm good so that's what Ifigured now what I'd like to do is putWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00them on my arm like thishe feels really secure see that he'squite comfortable like this and that wayI can really get in there and get thatcoat cleanednow can you pay the baby Kenny ping youcan but you usually don't have to unlessWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20they have they are the Alistar every ormore they're really dirtyotherwise you're totally okay withwaiting on a young guinea pig you youknow you can wait till at least sixmonths before an effort that becausethey're just so cleanI know sometimes people are afraid thattheir guinea pigs will get so scaredWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40they could even have a heart attackoh my goodness you know guinea pigs arevery dramatic as I'd like to say youhe'll have some piggies and like I saidhe is being really good some other platemight have been like screaming and oh mygod it's the end of the world stand ofthe world but they don't get a heartattack from of that they really don't soWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00I just want people to know and feel soconfident you're giving your Diggy abath okay little man now if a guinea pighas oh that's a groomer Scoob yeahthat's the floor scoop I just want toput a little bit right here this is theWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19stuff you were talking about earlier thedegreaser yes should get a zoom in onthat product Ohthere's a good degreaser and you havelinks for that right you know what I canWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40feel it really works I can feel it workokay let's rinse it off real quick let'sput it on again a little secondand you can totally see how it's kind ofdid a great jobyeah getting rid of all that extralittle flakes that greasy flakes thereokay nice lukewarm water so I can startWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00Watch at: 17:00 / 17:20to rinse them off if you're gonna fixWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40really dirty you could definitely do ittwice give him a bath twice rinse themoff and this is see how the skin flakesfeel really you rinse out of the coatokaymy likingWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00now the easy way to do the bottom partand under the neck is to turn them overWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20like this and you can actually run thewater if he's still you wait till themto lurk nice and calm and you can runthe water very close to the eye becausethey will usually sit very quietly foryou and sometimes not see how we triedWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40to nip me you're a very good boy thoughbecause we didn't even it so you couldhave really took a chunk out of myfinger there buddywhat you didn't nursery boy just withouta confident grip on that right yeah IWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00think that's that's half the job reallycuz nothing people get really scaredwhen guinea pigs are scared when theystart to you know little struggle andfight and people just like oh my goshI'm hurting my guinea pig but you you'renot you really aren't so confident gripknowing that any pigs don't don't biteas a rule goes a long way okay so he'sWatch at: 19:00 / 19:20nice rinsed out a little conditioner andI just love holding him like thisbecause you see how he's just supercomfortable so some people might ask whydid guinea pigs need a conditioner justlike people just makes it a licensedWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40soft fact I just gave my my little dogbooty a good bath last night because hecame he was in the yard and he came backwas like 12 o'clock at night was gettingready to go to bed and I he's barkingand barking I don't like gosh they won'tgo out there with the light and he's inthe big pig stall Pepe he's with Pepeand they're all standing and him andWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00Jojo that chased something up the tree Ithink anyway again I'm inside the houseand he is covered in the mud from thatbeast mud pit covered head-to-toe he'snever done that beforeand I'm like no I'm not gonna wait tiltomorrow and do your bath oh thank youvery much yeah you're gonna get wet byWatch at: 20:00 / 20:20the way give me a guinea pig ofthere's no there's no way around it soyou don't have to leave this thing fortoo long you just want to and I'll makeit work it's magic and that's prettyfast whereby you can really feel thecoat it's nice soft now just like youhear when you do it did your own hairwith the conditioner so I gave booty aWatch at: 20:20 / 20:40nice commissioners girl last night andhe's all soft and fluffy really makes adifference you can really tell all rightyou're doing a very good boy Spencer I'mthere almost done okay but then we got ablow dryer you you might not like thatWatch at: 20:40 / 21:00okay so again see how I'm holding thatlittle pot air which prevents me fromfighting with me too hard I alwayscomics the check mark cold where onefinger over going into some under butnow easy when you start a fight againWatch at: 21:00 / 21:20okay okay Stan I'm sorryand you wanna you know if you want toWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40use what you can you could kind of chillthis head up a little bit while you'rerinsing out this part here so it doesn'tlike go into his nose directly into hisnose I give you direct to stream likethis and obviously that is what wouldhappen it's not very comfortable butagain they don't get ear infections fromWatch at: 21:40 / 22:00bathing it's okay for them they get alittle water in those or in the earsnobody's gotta join in it he's such asweetheart though he's not actually likethreatening to but he's barely evenWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20touching me okay caught on your faceright there sorry buddy all right allright so after your bath you want tomake sure you dry them towel dry yourWatch at: 22:20 / 22:40pinkie really well super importantbecause that will cut down on the blowdrying time so you really want to rubyour dry towel into this coat boy now ifyou have a long-haired guinea pig thisis the time where you're gonna want todo the brushing because you just put theWatch at: 22:40 / 23:00moisturizer in the conditioner sorry inthe hair which will really help withbrushing so I know he doesn't reallyhave long hair but you can totally seehow much this just slides through nowthough and that's because of thatcondition are the magic Trans Amconditioner you know people actually inEurope say well we don't have that brandWatch at: 23:00 / 23:20but it's a little brand really that youuse for yourself you can use for yourguinea pigthere okay so you want to do thetrimming and the brushing after the bathbecause that's when otherwise it's kindof a hard to do you know brush to hearWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40good if there's these if it's matador nobut when it's just got the nice - theconditioner on it it's so much easier tobrush to comb through and then to cutinto a proper job but if they have a lotof mattes you want to cut those beforeyeah super big mats yeah you definitelywant to cut them before but you want todo like the the last bit you know toWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00really get the look going you want to dothat after and he's got some milky stuffin his eyes a lot of people ask aboutthat so this is what happensshe usually after a bath because theygonna start to kind of wash themselvesand clean themselves a little bit andthis is a natural thing that happensthat they produce this white fluid intheir eyesWatch at: 24:00 / 24:20and what you will see them do is thatthey will grab that fluid and they'llstart washing their whole face with itso it's like a grooming liquid a naturalgrooming liquid now a lot of peoplethink that actually that's what I that'swhat someone told me is that becausethey produced that grooming liquid thatis fine for the whole body to take careof themselves with that little bit ofWatch at: 24:20 / 24:40liquid that they produce in their eyebut you know it's never gonna they arenever gonna do a good a good of a job asyou would with a bath so okay alrightbuddyyou starting to get a little cold nowyou they start to shake which is normalbeing analytical very important that youreally dry blow dry your guinea pig soyou really want to make sure they're dryWatch at: 24:40 / 25:00because if it's just a little damp andyou put them back they can get they canget a cold they can actually get anupper respiratory as well so what youwant to do is make sure that youblow-dry them really well and if it'sreally nice warm day in the summer youcan just put them out outside and thenthey will drive by themselves now we'reWatch at: 25:00 / 25:20not in the direct sunlight no directsunlight no yeah and always make sure itis a piece of shade where they can go ifthey want to sit in the direct Sun theycan choose to do to do so themselvesalright some guinea pigs flip out whenyou actually turn it on so let's see ifhe's gonna be good boy so far he's beenawesome[Music]Watch at: 25:20 / 25:40Watch at: 25:40 / 26:00good boy happy buddy so there it easyWatch at: 26:00 / 26:20but definitely guinea pigs need aboutabsolutely so three to four times a yearand give you a guinea pig a back thanksWatch at: 26:20 / 26:40s this is gonna be super helpful now Ican tell everybody to go wash thosevideos yes is exactly what that questionwatching all the time yeah all rightthanksyou

  1. Years ago, we had a gorgeous longhaired g.p. named Mr Chuckles. He needed baths regularly, and just loved them. Floating in warm water was his favorite thing to do. He just purred and purred…

  2. Hi Saskia, though I am not an expert on Guinea Pigs, I am qualified in veterinary medicine and we did have a course on Guinea Pigs where we were told that you should only bathe a Guinea Pig that has certain medical needs, as they are self cleaning animals and if you bath them without medical reason, it could be life threatening. I am in no way challenging your views, but as a student in veterinary medicine I would love to know your opinion on this! I am starting my intern at a clinic in about a month and feel totally petrified! Thanks so much:)

  3. Sorry I have to critise it, you say lot of good points…Guiny Pigs don't need baths to stay clean, some hate that and it frightens them (8 out of 8 I have hate it). (If they don't have any skin problems.) The most important thing about the hair is having a clean environment and some skin and hair food, e.g. apple (not too much, about once a week) what makes it soft. My guiny(s) always cleaned themselves couple times a day! (looks like hamsters do so cute :3) If the hair is always pretty clean and there are no disseases just don't stress them unnecesarily

  4. Uhh… They are self cleaning. You shouldnt bathe your guniea pigs

Guinea pigs are known to be an extremely clean creatures who groom themselves very often. Therefore, you rarely need to give them a bath. Please do not bathe your guinea pig unless it is necessary. Unnecessary baths will result in dry fur coats and skin. They can also get really anxious during the process, resulting in biting and nipping. I haven't bathed my guinea pig and she's fine dispute having long fur, of course she gets butt matts but all you have to do is trim them or brush them out. Please do not bathe your guinea pig unless instructed by a professional. I bet this guinea pigs trust with it's owner is horrible, and there can be other risks too. Guinea pigs are great at keeping themselves clean, but you might have to bathe yours if it has an infection or abscess. Only bathe your guinea pig if you absolutely need to so you don’t cause it any unneeded stress
Edit: Her reasoning in the first clip is hilarious, "Do you bathe your dog? I bet you do"
A dog and a guinea pig are two completely different things with different levels of processing. You can't compare a guinea pig to a dog and expect everyone to immediately believe you. They don't "Have" to have baths. I know this woman may think she's an expert but I don't believe so, I may be wrong, but I don't believe this and I will go on to not bathing my guinea pig to save her not only her health, but her and my sanity. PLEASE ONLY BATHE IF NEEDED!

  5. I have an absyssian piggie. Any grooming information when bathing. I heard they can lose their cowlicky texture, which I'm not buying into. But just want to know if there is certain ways to properly care for special textured piggies.

  6. Hi Saskia, and everyone at LA guinea pig rescue I am getting 3 piggies very soon and i have been trying to find a suitable shampoo, I have tried the links but unfortunately they are both unavailable, I know you posted this almost a year ago but I could really use some advice.

  7. I Love your videos, my guinea pig is only 2 1/2 months I think so he doesn't need a bath yet but I was watching a youtube that is really against guinea pigs getting wet and them having a bath but after watching this I realized he can't get sick from a bath.

  8. can i bathe my piggy if he’s only 2 months old? he is having static mites problem and is very itchy 🙁 the breeder told me to bathe him with green tea or lemon juice and warm water. is this good advice?
