ofequipment and by we I mean me we would abunch of equipment did a bunch of thingsand I want to make sure this is workingbefore I get into the technical talk ofNevada so no one no one's a ragequittingWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00yet so I'm gonna guess that's goingalright so it comes to cloudy water likethis so I got a couple things going onone there's always gonna be a little bitof glare and I will work on thatcontinually for the live stream but youcan see things like whatever that isthat's a glare from this wall on theother side of the room so thatWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20inherently makes this look a little bitcloudy but we took out all the fish sowe had Archer fish in there we had thegold nugget pleco the Pinstripe Pinnockwe had data noise we had the ghost knifewe had ladybird all that stuff had tocome out right and then I put theseWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40Hungry Hippos in there the goldfish andthey've been munching away at thesubstrate you can still see back herethey haven't gone deep yet they're stillon that top layer and so what they'vebeen doing is they've been just churningup everything and putting into the watercolumn now I guess this is let me showyou my my poop bucketWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00that's a nice soundhashtag stole this bucket from fritz ata show but this is what I call kind ofthe bucket you can see here I've beenWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20using fine filter floss to capture thefine particles you can see down downthere it gets way worse that is brownwater I was poured onto myself but thisgets dumped outside we wring it out weyou know throw them away and that's howWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40we have our sump set up here so thistanks problem currently is particles inthe water bits of food bits of poop bitsof plant matter because we used to havea big bulb itis in there and let's takeus far from finished by the way but weWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00need to get mechanical debris out ofthereand what we do what I guess how we'regonna do that is in here find filterpads and other aquariums we could usesponge filters we could usehang on backs we can use almost anythingthat's gonna have something to catchWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20stuff and so like this fine pad its goalso let me make sure people know whatfine is the fine or something is theharder it is for stuff to pass throughit something really coarse the easier itis to pass through it and so this ismeant to catch the finest particles andyou can see here like there's somebigger particles because I had just fedWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40that's actually a goldfish poop you canthat goldfish just pooped right there soyou can see real time that's what'sgoing on in thereand then you have all these tinyparticles the tiny particles are stuffthat's been broken down over time andthat's what goldfish do people ask a lotWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00of times like what kind of cleaner fishcan I get sometimes they even say whatkind of cleaner fish can I get for mygoldfish and the reality is goldfish area cleaner fish they will continuallybreak down their own waste I'll poop itout they'll eat it again each time I dothat they digest a little moreand the particles get smaller which foran aquarium is usually a good thing nowWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20I debated on whether I was gonna go liveor not today at all because I knew thistank was not ready I was like ah I dideverything like yesterday pretty muchand I serviced the filters again todaywhen I touched the filter it wafted moreback into the tank I was like geez I didWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40a bunch of water changes and I've beenkind of battling it to get that stuffout of the water but I said you knowwhat let's go it's been a few weeks I'vebeen super busy if I don't do it nowthen it's gonna be another week and thenwe're not gonna do anything so I saidtoday's a day and so mechanicalfiltration this is gonna clear itself upWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00in a few days mechanical would be theways we've listed also mechanically itwould be water changing because we'reyou know physically taking the breedingdebris out of the water that's the goalcan we remove this from the water andthe reality is yes but some of thethings you got to think about is wemight be putting it into the water justas fast for taking it out if we'reWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20feeding a bunch of messy fish food if wedo that every day and we've only got asystems pulling out three-quarters ofwhat that is we have a system that'salways building up and that's kind ofwhat happened in here in my 800 gallonaquarium is that the mix of fish I hadwhile they didn't fight there was noproblems there feeding them was actuallyWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40quite difficult and the archers onlywant to eat from the very top ladybirdthe maboob puffer only want to eat clamsthe surfetta Cara's and the data nodesand the plecos wanted to eat from thebottom and eat sinking pellets and sobecause I had to put all these differentfood types in it led to extra debris inthe water where if I could have just fedWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00just one what I made a little easier ifI could have had only frozen foods thatmake it easier as well the archers theyjust never did well on the frozen foodbecause they only want to eat from thetop say either a grab a whole cube orbead nothing and so some were too smallI grabbed the whole cube and it was aWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20problem so the food that goes in can bevery important cleaner foods mean lessmaintenance typically frozen foods livefoods those do wellyeah I would say that that's themechanical portion of it now if youdidn't see some of these bigger likefloating pieces in this tank you mightWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40think from the video that this is abacterial bloom and that usuallypresents itself with kind of cloudywhite water and if you have a whitebucket or something you can look down inand you can see you'll see what colorthe water is and that typically happenswhen we've disrupted bacteria so andWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00this would have been a perfect example Ihad a dream the water level down to hereto catch the fish out so all thebacteria that lived on these big panelsof acrylic did die so there might stillbe some bacterial bloom going in hereI'm just assuming 99% of it ismechanical or the the particles right soWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20we may have disrupted the bacteria quitea bit we might we might put a big fishload and here like my fish load is lowcompared to what was in there but if Ihad gone from this and put all the fishI took out and put those in the bacteriamight bloom to try and catch up and soWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40that presents itself in the white waterthe remedy for that is kind of to donothing basically we killed a bunch ofbacteria or we need bacteria that's thegoals we need bacteria and the onlything we can really do is let it settleon two surfaces and establish itself andthat will clear that water up if we usesomething like a UV sterilizer or do aWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00ton of water changes that's going to getrid of that bacteria but then thebacteria itself goes hate still don'thave enough bloom again right and sogetting a cycle it's very common if Itry and if this was cloudy water frombacterial bloom if I try to change waterand get my way through it that way allI'm doing is resetting every day and youWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20know it's kind of a double whammy likehere I can just flow water in it'll flowout but you at home might have to likedrain the water halfway meanwhile allthe bacteria up above died then you fillit back up again so you took out whatback tree out of the water column youtook it off the glass and you get intoWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40this situation where it might just be anever-ending process so a lot of timesitjust got to sit there and let it be theway it is and it will clear up so that'syou know not a great answer because youmight have a party this weekend it'sgonna look greatblah blah like well then do your waterchange and know that you're justdelaying everything it's gonna go onthere but that's my advice my advice isWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00wait that one outnow let's say you've got the finestfilters in the world and that doesn'tseem to be picking much up by the waylike in this tank one of these that onefrom that was on the top lasted twohours so I'm definitely changing theseout you know I'm changing out I changedWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20I went out more frequently trying toreally polish water for the live streamnormally I'd let that go overnight andreally let it get clogged up but solet's say you've got all the finefiltration in the world and you took thewater sample and you kind of put it in awhite bucket and it looks green notwhite right like oh man my water iscloudy but it's green which in anWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40aquarium with good lighting green waterat the very low end of concentration orthe beginning will look like cloudywhite water so that's why you got to getinto like a white buck and you see thegreen tint and when you see that greentint we know it's a green water algaebloom now again this can kind of get outWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00of control if we do nothing typically itjust gets worse and worse and worseuntil we get like pea soup green type ofalgae going on in there and that's notgood to look at very healthy for thefish typically because it's gonna suemning waste but we can't filter it outwith a pad and we've got a couple waysWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20we could try giant water changes I ammyself find that I'm usually neversuccessful with thatI've tried it several times and itdoesn't work for me doesn't mean thatthere are other people get it to work Imyself find that I can't water changemyself or my way through itso I end up relying on one of a coupleWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40methods - the second one is you couldcompletely black out the tank so whatthat means is no light gets in there atall even when you're feeding all thatkind of stuff like no light becausegreen water can survive off very lowlevels of light all right so you couldcover this tank with a blankturn off all the lights you let that gofor seven to ten days and most likelyWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00you would kill off a bunch of that greenwater now the steps I do when I try thatmethod would be do a large water changeso we're moving a lot of the green waterand then fill it back up cover it nolight and then what's left let's say wehad fifty percent of that green waterleft it's gonna die and actually createWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20ammonia so when we get a week ten daystake us back off we do another waterchange so that we get rid of any of thatexcess ammonia plus we're gonna turnlights back on if we have ammonia in thewater and we have light and any of thosegreen water spores left it's gonna bloomreally hard again so that's one way toWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40go about getting rid of the green waterI myself this DNA it just goes straightto a UV sterilizer it changes the cellstructure of the the spore or the greenwater and makes it so it doesn'treproduce that allows you to start waterchanging it out that's the way I go andit doesn't take a very big UV sterilizerWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00could be a pretty small one for a largeaquarium or a large pond because greenwater is fairly easy to kill unlike ikor some like that where it takes quite abit of UV sterilization actually pullthat off so yeah that's UV sterilizedit's not a bad thing to have aroundanyway you know pair it with salt likeWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20UV sterilizer and salt to treat it veryvery good so there are definitely usesoutside of disagreeing water and thenthere's you know there's weird thingsthat could just be in your water likecoming from your source water and thatkind of stuff and that's a little hardto diagnose and you kind of go down arabbit hole of who knows what's in thewater but those are the main things thatWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40people run into you could get cloudywater from let's say tannins so if yourwater's really brown and because he'sgot a bunch of wood in there that wasone of the things I took all the woodout that was definitely I'm not a hugefan of wood so I kind of like the tanninWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00look I don't like all the wood pulp fromwood eating plecos I typically like tokeep and no matter how much water Ichange in there there would always be atinta Brown and for what I want to doand that is put it on video takepictures short our livestream thatlittle bit of brown wasn't good itWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20wasn't what I wanted to see but if I'mif just I am enjoying it I don't mindbrown water at all it looks really goodit's you know it I'm not trying to getgood lighting to film it you know to geta good clear picture of a fish you gottahave good lighting and not have thebrown and all that so you know I'm Itend to lean towards rocks or fake wooddecor in things that I need to work withWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40but if personal enjoyment like I loveoutside my ponds very tannin I love itsuper good for the fish and overall doesgreat but if you needed to get rid oftannins things you could do would beused some chemical absorbers things likecarbon you know a carbon pad oractivated carbon in a little sock so I'mWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00like that you could use peerage in puregeneral trap that up for you and it'srechargeable which is nice kind of apain but is rechargeable and those twoare the main ways to get rid of besideschanging water you can change a bunch ofwater but I tell you what I had a lot ofwood in there and a change of ton ofwater I could never really get ahead ofWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20that personally how do I putthisI don't cycle aquariums that way I meaneven though chemically my aquariums dothatI I I basically have an order ofWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40operations that I follow when I'm takingcare of aquarium water and that is keepammonia to 0.5 or less keep nitrite to0.5 or less and keep nitrates to 40parts per million or less okay so in aWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00case where we have all three of thosepresent it does show signs of youraquarium is not adequately processingstuff from ammonia all the way intonitrates at least in at a rate that'sgonna keep up with what your aquariumwants to do right so I would help it outwith doing water changes so a lot ofWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19people what they think is if I changewater and all those numbers drop myaquarium is not going to cycle what weneed to remember is we're buildingbacteria so if you have five units ofbacteria in your filter and you changewater and you remove the ammonia and youremove the nitrite you remove theI treat it doesn't remove the bacteriaWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40it just removed those those are theparts that get hurting the fish right sothen you feed again a couple days laterthose parts go back up you still havethe five bacteria the whole goal wascycling an aquarium is to find out howmany of those bacteria do you need tosupport you feeding if you needed eightso now we have eight but you only hadWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00five you're always gonna be left withthree parts of you know ammonia nitritenitrate somewhere in there you're gonnabe left with those right so all we'retrying to do is buy time betweengenerating more bacteria to handle thatload and keeping the fish healthy whileWatch at: 17:00 / 17:20that process happens so in a you knowyour question is are you come are youclose to completing the cycle we can'tknow because we don't know how fastyou're building the ammonia so you arein the process right so it kind of belike if I my business if what we need toWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40hire people right mm-hmm and we'rehiring a person a week okay let's saywe're doing that are we close to beingdone hiring the answer we can only knowthat well how many people do we need tohire Oh 500 oh we've hired four we'renot anywhere closeso until we know really what the levelsare it's hard to know how close we areWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00to being complete but we can do thosewater changes we can alleviate that andbuy us some time the good news is if youjust stop feeding your fish that willlighten the load need less bacteria soif you needed eight bacteria becausethey're feeding eight pellets a daylet's say and you're continually doing aWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20water change and you're having thatthree parts of waste left one of theways you can address that if you retireto doing water changes is only feed fivepellets a day so you change water waterlevels are good now instead of feedingeight we only feed five and let theaquarium kind of okay digest that reallywell for like a week then step it up goWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40okay we're going to feed six pellets aday right and you might go test thewater oh I don't see any any variancethere and if you step up slowly that isaa great way to do it and you shouldn'treally be detecting a lot of that soit's one of the reasons why when I doWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00use medswe recommend not feeding and that kindof stuff because we don't want to buildup ammonia if we compromised any of thebacterial colony that we have going andin general with meds like when I feelsick I don't eat nearly as much and justthat's how animals work in general youknow not that fish or animals but youknow things when sickWatch at: 19:00 / 19:20don't act normal so yeah that's how Iwould handle that and just slow andsteady a lot of these things it's easyto feel overwhelmed or scared we'regonna kill fish the reality is though ifwe know the process to get throughsomething it's usually just mathproblems of like oh I have three partsWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40per million ammonia and I have a 50gallon tank if I change 25 gallons ofwater and we left with 1.5 ppm ofammonia is still too much right so thenyou might change half wait an hour to gochange half again you'll be at 0.75 waitan hour to go change half again nowyou're down low enough to be in a safeWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00level and you can kind of let that ridefor a while so hopefully that'll helpyou get through that I know you had saidearlier in the chat which if you guysaren't showing up early to chat youmight consider it because we talked andwe talked about all kinds of stuff butnewer For mechanical cloudy (my 20 gallon tank) I put a coffee filter on my hob. I put it on the tank side. It MUST be change every day or it will turn to slimy mush. It doesn't need to be used often though.

Your goldfish on the bottom looks depressed sitting on the bottom. Mine did that and l discovered he was not well and he developed ICH. BTW he’s better now and as big as the big gold one you have there. I also noticed once when he survived velvet disease his black markings went, after surviving ICH he is gradually getting his black markings back on the tips of his tail and fins. They’re beautiful.
Just out of interest what do you think of the stuff you add to the water called Crystal Clear? I have used it and found it initially goes white when added to the water then clears the clouding.

I just started a 55 gallon with dirt substrate. I'm having very cloudy water, it's gotten a little better over the past two days. But it is still very much present. I have one of the large foam filters and a Fluval 70 filter. How can i clear this water up, and is it going to happen every time i touch the dirt?

The information on your web site helped me find out how to treat my betta; I had to work like hell to find out what it was and I needed some final information before I used salt treatment and other meds and I wasn't in the mood to be patient. Your information was clear and it worked most importantly. He had Saprolegnia and had a very bad spot of it. There was never such a great feeling than watching that spot gradually decrease and eventually fall off. He was my first betta and I just love him so thanks for the help.
I know this stream is super old, but color enhancing fluval flakes turned all my tanks pink basically right away!
