Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20hi everyone welcome back to her CubaCavaliers Channel I'm here today withher key and Milton in a bit of adifferent setup this is a side thatyou've never seen of our headquartersand it's where we usually die ofAlicia's but today I wanted to hop onwith her Ken Melton to do our roomingvideo if you haven't seen our groomingessentials video I'll be linking it upWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40here for you but in it I showed you howI show you some essential products andalso a new grooming kit that I got thatI want to start using on her againMilton the reason being is that her kidMilton they get really anxious when theygo to the groomer so I have stoppedtaking them to the groomers and now Iwant to try to do it at home this willbe my first time so please no judgmentsI can't guarantee that it's gonna workWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00but I'm gonna try and we're here tolearn because a lot of you asked to seeit so here we are when I posted thatinitial video of grooming there's afollower named Bex and she's a calf momand her Cavalier is a ruby Cavaliernamed lady so Thank You Baxter forsending those videos over she's agroomer in the UK and she just showed meWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20some videos of how she grooms a spanielso I watched those over the weekend andhopefully this will become somethinglike useful kind of stressed out but I'mgonna do my best I'm really gonna do mybestand hopefully this is helpful for you soI kind of made like a makeshift groomingWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40table here I'm gonna try and see how itworks okay so this is my makeshiftgrooming table just to hold her key upright I have seen some groomers do thisand I think it's gonna be kind of usefulfor our purposes today so I bathed themWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00last nightthey're clean I'm gonna start by combingthem out and then we're gonna proceedwith like little knots and Matt but fornow I'm just gonna brush her outsee like even right now she's sort ofWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20anxious I think it may be the positionthat she doesn't like see so I'm gonnastart out with the regular scissors justto get out some knots like I feelcertain knots all those you can try tobrush them out when you can but there'sjust certain us that I know like I can'tget out so those I'm gonna cut itWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40usually happens like under their armpitsshe has a lot and also behind her fearshe has a really really big one rightnow I got almost you can see it it lookslike a dreadlock so this is really up toyou how you want to cut them but I'mjust gonna go in with scissorsRikki's thing and be very very gentleWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00when you cut these out because it'sreally thin to my things not reallygonna work because it's beside reallysensitive skin and really thin skin sobe careful behind there I know her hershe just exhaled like she's really donewith this already I think some rumorsWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20correct me if I'm wrong but once there'sbig knots like this though usually shavethe area I think it might be easier butI'm just gonna cut really close here yousee like it's a really really big thickknot it's really unfortunate when shehas big nos like this and I try to brushher every day to be honest but umWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40sometimes these knots just happen andaside from this personally I'm not gonnatake off any more from her ears becauseshe doesn't have a lotthe main part that I want to focus on isthe body and especially like this area Ithink it's getting really really thickand heavy so that's like where I'm gonnacut the most the gist of what Bex wasWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00telling me is that when you have aspaniel or some sort of dog with longhair like this what you want to do isalways use thinning shears and this willlike keep the natural look because whenyou go in with blunt scissors like onthe fur like this it's gonna look superunnatural so what the Beck's was sayingWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20basically that you really have to combit really well it has to be super wellcombed and then you just trim away withthethinning shears oh god here goesWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40it really doesn't cut much so I'm happyabout that so I'm just going in andbiggie how to hurt your hair like thisis how much it cut with all this cuttingthat I did so I think we can go inWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00pretty heavily at this point just okayyeah good cutting you here No herkieWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20hates it when we hold her paws so thisis really not making it really good andsorry for the weird cutting angles andI'm kind of filming alone so it's kindof hard I'm gonna go in on her sides tofakie like here she has a lot of volumeWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40so I'm just gonna run it down you kindof want to go in them in the directionthat the hair is growing and thin itthat way so it looks more natural againit's really up to you how you cut yourdog but I feel like a Cavalier andWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00spaniels and like certain Shepherds andstuff they have this natural look thatlooks like really really gorgeous and ifyou go in with blunt scissors it justwouldn't make a lot of sense so I'm justgonna cut and comb as we go it alreadylooking very good don't you thinkWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20Wow I like the look of this just keepspinning a bithonestly discovering these thinningscissors is going to be a godsend for meWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40life-changing Wow what do you guys thinkWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00this leg thing let's look at the otherleg doesn't it look a lot better I'mvery very happy about how this is I'mgonna try to do the other leg on thisside and see if the angle works well soWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20I'm having a bit of a hard time becauseI feel like this list I'm gonna try toswitch the angles gonna be awkward andyou can't really see but um since I'mright handed I feel more comfortable ifshe's on this side and I'm trimming thatleg so you won't see me grooming theside or cutting the side but I'm gonnashow you after you can sort of imagineWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40Spaniel hair like like human hair cuzyou want natural layers so it looks morenatural than like if it was just cutbluntly across you know what's funny isthat I'm talking like I really know whatI'm doing that's what I don't this is myfirst time and honestly I was reallyreally dreading this and I was like howWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00can I make her ki look better but nottake her to the groomers you have noidea how heartbreaking it was last timeI brought her to the groomers and Miltonwas with her it was the first time thatMilton went but she didn't get any ofher haircuts she just went for a baththey were both in a cage trembling andWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20salivating so much in their little cageso I don't think it's that worth it toput them through that yeah you're doinggreat sweetieoh you sat down how about how aboutWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40okay so I'm just gonna do the slideshere just to thin down her coat of itI'm not gonna take much under her bellybecause she doesn't have that much funhair there but if your dog has a lot offeathers down here maybe you can takeWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00just this thinning scissors and go downthis way or even down here just gonnatake some around her neck also her neckis kind of fluffy but not too much sorryhere youWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20I know you hate itso I think her front paws look prettygood right nowwell I was really nervous to do this butI think it's going okay so I was lookingat what you guys see and I I don't feelWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40like you see very well that she's hadsome hair out so I'm gonna just thin itup a bit moreokay now I'm gonna try to do these backWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00legs are kind of looking like very fuzzytoo just like them for front legs so Ibrush them out and I'm just gonna runthe scissors against it to again alwaysthinning scissors this makes it reallyeasy to like beginner-friendlygrooming because not much comes out ofWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20it and it basically just thins out theentire thing especially the hair aroundthe bum I might even go in with straightscissors around the bump and then thinit out just because I'm when the hairback here gets really long there's a lotof pee and poo that can get stuck thereWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40so I might just some sort of cut it andthen thin it I know you don't like ityou don't like when we touch your pawsin your leg Harry so I think there'sWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00gonna be a lot of trimming to be done inthe back here I'm just gonna keepthinning the back legs so where do youguys think of this back leg no good alot better than it was okay so I'm gonnaWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20try to show you her bum I know her thingyeah you can see it's pretty long hereso I'm gonna try to go it with scissorsdown like this and then thin it out butthis is optional and you don't reallydon't have to do it it's just that as Imentioned her when it's long like thisthey tend to geta lot of pee and poo stuck there I'mWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40kind of scaredI've seen some videos on YouTube thatpeople when they do this they call itthe poo tunnel if I'm not mistaken okayWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00so now the cut is pretty blunt I'm sorryI'm just gonna thin it out to make itequalthat's a terrible cutting job by the waylike this doesn't look goodWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20no not working so this is what I mean byWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40that thinning scissors can make a bluntcut looks a bit look a bit more naturalokay so my battery died sometime duringwhich I was trimming this leg so I don'tWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00know what you've seen or what youhaven't but I think I'm pretty much donewith this leg there pretty equal now notperfect because again this is my firsttime doing it but I'm trying so what doyou guys think of this leg the back I'mnot quite happy with like it looks a bitsomething but as you can see I tried toWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20like cut down here and then thin it outI kind of want to keep the look ofGrinch feed because I love Grinch feetbut you could trim them around what I'mgonna do is just trim under her paw padsshe hates when we touch her paws so thismight be a bit tricky but wait how aboutI first try to do her tail I love theWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40look of these fan of tales thatCavaliers house so I'm just gonna thinit out a bit but not muchI have no idea what I'm doing by the wayso I'm just gonna no thin it out just abit of volume like thatWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00very minimal here I know Ricky you don'tlike when we touch anything I know okayyou don't like it I'm almost done I'msorry I'm sorry Ricky hates gettingWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20touch at a lot of places so you canimagine how anxious you must be whenthis happens with a strangernot happy speaking of I'm gonna give hera treatnothing you get some just because justbecause nothing so I think you guys getWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40the principle of what I want to do visitkeeps everything very natural just gonnatake her call here and trim under I'mbasically just cutting out all the hairand covering her paw pads again I'mgonna keep the look of the Grinch feetand just go cut this hair I think someWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00rulers correct me if I'm wrong but shaveunder the paw pads it might be a biteasier but I've never used a clipper inmy life so I'm kind of nervous justgoing in with the Clipper although herkey has a mustache and I think the bestway to like cut that would probably beWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20[Music]and then since I like the look of bridgefiend I'm just gonna brush them out butif you want to trim those the trick Iread is to pull up the Grinch feet fromWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40between the toes I might just take a bitout with the thinning scissors just alittle bit but yeah that's how I have noidea how I'm gonna cut her front paws Idon't know what I'm doing I don't knowhow to trim this without her being souncomfortable like this this yeahWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00okay I'm gonna char like this you foldit under and then just trim around thepop head and be careful not to snip anyskin be firm in your grip but try not tohurt them okay good girl stay stay stayWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19nope nope Fergie no don't pull don'tpull hey excuse me ma'am oh my godherkie stop moving please no no no okayWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40she really doesn't want me to touch herunder pause a lot of hair flying aroundokay so that's all she wants me to do soI'm not gonna force her too muchher Grinch feet in the front art as longas in the back so I'm gonna leave itWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00like thatnow I just got to him again the paw padsunder here the back paws are a biteasier according to me according to herkey she's so sick of this I'm sorry herkey[Music]Watch at: 17:00 / 17:20you're gonna just push the hair upbetween her toes for the Grinch beat inthe back and then I'm just going to trimjust a bit of the volume because theones in the back half up a bit morelength I'm gonna make this quick RickyWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40I'm tired all right we're almost donewhat I have to do left is her chest soWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00I'm just gonna brush this out and I kindof want to keep the look natural becauseshe doesn't have a lot of chest hair butI think chest hair on a Cavalier is sobeautiful so I'm gonna try to keep itvery natural and her key doesn't have alot of hair there so I'm just gonna doit very quickly and not a lotWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20I'm very impressed by how dummy frienduse is like I'm a very clumsy person andWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40if I can do this you can do anything youlike good babyhe's a kid all right do I dare try to doher mustache so you guys see her keysmustache here I think when we went tothe groomers they shaped it so there'sfour attachments for this thing there'sWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00three millimeter six millimeter ninemillimeter and twelve so just I'm gonnado 12 first can you trust mommy just fora little bit I promise this is the lastthing we do okay yes I love you goodWatch at: 19:00 / 19:20[Music]okay kind of work but she's reallyafraid of it okay so she's not veryWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40happy with the Clipper as you can see soI'm just gonna try to thin out hermustache here Lucas you know happy Keithnow I'm just gonna do some finishingWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00touches I noticed that this leg backhere is the bit thicker still than theother side so I'm just gonna work onthis a bit and then we're gonna call dadin to see how he finds her keys me petwhat you should get trim to reallycatchy okay but just to get it okayWatch at: 20:00 / 20:20first gear so Stevie oh wow that'sreally nice yeah look a bit more yeahlook how easy this is it's incredibletake set hereyeah just like makers dynamic good likeit just it's like dummy proof does itWatch at: 20:20 / 20:40told me yeah thank you for the tipsyes thank you Beck's for the video so doyou like guys like it this is her keysyou look terrific Ikey yeah this islooks more put together yeah everybodyneeds a good trip she's not happy withthis look I mean ask the jerky turkeyWatch at: 20:40 / 21:00the show dog for everywhere I know[Music][Applause][Music]Watch at: 21:00 / 21:20okay so most rumors usually the the tidethe dogs with the neck I just feel likewith her key and Milton they tend to situp more when their hips are up so thisWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40is why I'm using it their harness thisis just a regular harness and they havelike a pole here that I'm using as awreckso dad thinks that her Milton needs atrim too so I'm just gonna go do thesame thing around her feather shedoesn't have much at all so I'm gonnakeep it easy on there I'm also gonnatrim maybe her chest a bit but it'smainly gonna be her legs this is not theWatch at: 21:40 / 22:00best idea to leave your hair loose whenyou do this because I think I choppedoff some of my hair tooWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20[Music]so Milton doesn't have much hair on herWatch at: 22:20 / 22:40butt so I'm not gonna cut it I'm justgonna thin it out using the thinningscissors but if it's longer like her keyfeel free to cut and then doubt evengood news me know so I think that's itWatch at: 22:40 / 23:00for her body yeah and she doesn't havemuch so it's not as much of a trimmingjob as it is for her key I'm just goingto trim her paw pads[Music]all right so here's milton's finishedWatch at: 23:00 / 23:20trim it literally took like ten minutesnot even because she has so little hairoh wait did I do this link good girl youdid so wellyou did so well for your first haircutyou must adhere her keys got girlWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40[Music][Applause][Music][Applause]all right so that's it for the video itWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00was a very long one at least behind thescenes it was I don't know how long I'mgonna make this video but I hope youenjoyed and this gives you some courageto groom your dogs at home like I wasreally really scared of it but honestlythese scissors or the thinning shears isreally really a lifesaver it's reallydummy proof like I'm super clumsy and Ithought if I didn't know about this forWatch at: 24:00 / 24:20sure I would have never kept them athome but this made it super easy her keynote that's your hair this made it supereasy and I think the girls don't mind itas much at all as going to the groomersthank you again to Bex for sending overthose videos it really gave me a lot ofcourage to do this so I hope you guysenjoyed this video if you 1. Great job! We have a cavi/corgi mix. We say our Brady is a cross between Farrah Fawcett and Fabio. His hair is beautiful. We have recently started grooming him ourselves. The use of thinning shears is the best idea we have seen so far. We are going to do that next time so that the cut is more natural. Thanks for all the ideas. Love your channel.

  2. GREAT JOB!!!! You did so well and for your first time We groom at home as well but learned a few tips – thank you!!! Are you able to share or link the videos that you speak about from your groomer friend??

  3. Noooo! That's not how it's done! I am a cavalier show breeder. NO TRIMING for cavalier! I even can accept the potty area. Never on shoulders. Never for nots. You need to search for a good detangler. It took me 5+ dogs and almost 10 years. You need a good detangler and strip the shoulders. Just gently pull the loose air out. It can be time consuming and you can do it for 3 days until you or the dog are tired.

  4. Thank you for the video on grooming the Cavies. Herky looks exactly like my Cavalier, Anni, same texture and coat as Herky. I think I can do this, I have all the tools, just need confidence. My other Cavalier, Charlie, is Black and Tan, and like Milton is smaller. His coat is straight and very silky, and so very soft. He’s like a stuffed dog. I am going to groom them right now, thanks to your tips!

  5. I have found that using a yoga pilates mat on the table works perfectly for the dog to stand on and it is easy to clean. My dog feels secure standing on it and it doesn't bunch up like the towel.

  6. The next time you want to cut those cheek mustaches down, try using that clipper again but make sure you are clipping in the same direction as his cheek hair is growing. I adjust the clipper height to medium or high before I start – that way you know you won't be cutting too closely. Even then, use a light touch and don't press down too much on the clipper. You have to go slowly and talk to them sweetly as you trim. If they move abruptly, you run the risk of gapping up the side of their faces, so you have to be extra cautious in keeping them still. The sweeter and more reassuring you talk to them, the easier it will be. The end product is absolutely beautiful though.

  7. our groomer shut down due to Covid 19 and my cav was just due for a groom so I decided to try it myself, not perfect but at least some of that long hair is out of his way. this video was very helpful, thankyou!

  8. Hi! I’m a professional groomer, a great tip is not to be scared of the strait shears. What I like to do is use them to take off the bulk of the hair. The thinning shears are great of going back in and “erase” the blunt cut. Another thing about the shears be very careful, using them around her bum, under the belly, armpits, face and paw pads. The reason we use clippers around those areas isn’t because it’s easier it’s because it’s safer. There is a lot of thin skin and nipples that can get cut very easily! Also a great tip when your lifting feet and legs, don’t pull away from their body, keep their leg level with the body, it’s a lot more comfortable for them as they hold still more. Your dogs are so cute!!

  9. I use aa Pilates Exercise Mat on the table for grooming. It works great. It keeps my dog from sliding on the table and it is easy to clean, roll up, and store away. You can get them at an inexpensive price at TJMAXX or Marshalls.

  10. When you brush any dog. You won’t catch all the matts jus by brushing. You have to use a comb too because hair can be matted at the roots right next to the skin.

  11. Anyone know where she got the harness she used to hold the pup up. I have groomed my dogs for 15 years and have a professional sheers and table however I have been unable to find a good harness that keeps then stating up. There is a product out there called the dogupstand but its too expensive for me at the moment. Where could I find this black and red harness? Thanks.

  12. No judging. LOL. I have groomed/clipped my Standard Poodles for many years-last of 6 is a healthy 13 YO. Have an almost 5 YO tri Cav with heavy coat and very long feathers. I do use thinning shears to reduce her feet and leg feathers in the Winter. I also give her a sanitary clip. I have a mild allergy to her but now hives with it too so am considering clipping her shorter in order to deal with dander easier and bathe her more often. I’ve been checking out Cav grooming videos and find yours kind and reasonable. Since it will be a good long while until we travel, may try a clip and thin. She’s very patient for combing and brushing and doesn’t even mind being on the grooming table for her tummy clip so other than preferring a wash and dry dog (after years of clipping and scissoring)it may be worth it.

  13. I've just bought a pair of thinning shears 🙂 can't wait to get into our little CKC. Thanks for sharing! Great work Herky and Milton. So patient – such a beautiful breed.

  14. Go to a groomer. You don't know what you're doing and can injure your dog by using scissors. You're making plenty of money from all the views on your YouTube channel…you should be taking the dogs to a groomer

  15. I discovered thinning shears last year! Goodness I love them, I wish I had discovered them years ago when I had a golden retriever! They would be fantastic for keeping a goldens butt floof under control. I use them with my britany to keep his butt floof in check but also to keep his massive ear floof under control. He gets matts behind his ears and keeping it thinned back there goes a long way in preventing matts. If you have a long haired dog I cant reccommend thinning shesrs enough! Do be careful because they are wicked sharp.

  16. Thank you so much!!! The groomer I found wanted $65 which is understandable but due to financial reasons I just can’t swing that! I tried on my own and I agree as well with the thinning scissors! Made it so much easier and it’s really hard to mess up using these! My Otis just did not like the trim around his rectum! Was a fight and I was scared but I got it done!

  17. Good for you learning to groom your dog! I have been hacking away at my American Cocker Spaniels for about 20+ years. My sweet friend who got me started in agility and obedience was so encouraging. I have never shown them in conformation so grooming has been a little less intimidating.

  18. you just earned yourself a new subscriber! i’ve been looking to get a spaniel to train as a service dog and your videos are absolutely the best on youtube because i can 100% see your love for these little furballs
