Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20I'm Zach 1 on our show tell feetspecialist for green animal nutritionI'm here with Jon Devlin here we're atthe Austin County Fairgrounds anddevelopment senseswe're here to showmanship demo good aquick little demo and answer somequestions for you today I'm going toWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40turn it over to John and he'll lead youin the discussion hi guys I'm excited tobe here we've got an audience here tooso they're going to be asking somequestions as well I encourage you guysto ask some questions in the commentsbelow we've just concluded our dailycare segment I want to cover a littlebit of showmanship real quick firstWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00thing I want to talk about is equipmentwhen it comes to showthings yes thing for mewhen we're coaching kids just we need tostart with the right equipment for a lotof kidssoWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20when we're trying to figure out showsticks length or size[Music]we go to the shale supply trailer and wejust try to figure out which one fitsthe exhibitor the bestwe do the best thank youwhere were the best[Music]Watch at: 01:20 / 01:40we're way better off I thinkI did a show stickWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00the Heinekenfor instanceit's way too shortWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20and I like this show stick the bestwe're showing the staffyou have to reach back I have a footWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40the first thing it does is point backshoulderlike thisWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00[Music]I like youyeahso the next thing that I think is reallyimportant is to make sure that showthat three different sizeWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20there's actually four different sizesthat show halters shows holders alladjust you can see right here that theyadjust well for different stages whetherthey're big small like big red peppersare going to need more like a largeshelter they adjust a little bit butthey don't just adjust across this noseWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40a lot of times where cattle really startlight from that polesee it'll shake their head of mine90% of the time it's because that halterdoesn't fit super well across their nosewe want this showthose eyes but not up in their eyesWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00it's a lot of times if that show halt istoo big it'll come downunderneath their eyespressure around their noseWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20oh just a littleit's real styled out their skull now theother reason we want that to fit prettywell is we want to have a really closeclose triplook closelyWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40side of their head back in the day theyused to show cattle and they'd hold themlike this now we like to hold them likethisyou see camel in the penaltyswishing back and forth over there butback before we can get where they quitmoving their handWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00back and forth the bunch we getthat control that head I can't prove itas much andthe rest of thathave a fairly close grip I like thosekidsalmost touching the cap when they'reholdingwhat we're talking about that I want toWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20talk about hand placement I like thatunder the hand gripright here we've got a lot of controlWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40sooptions we have for a leg strap as thissurehand lead where I really like it isfor younger kids smaller kids they haveWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00a little bit more leverage you canimagine there's a lot of times thoselittle kids are trying to reach up andhold the head up that's above their headand it takes all the pressure whatnormally would be on your knees yourknuckle it takes that pressure off itactually puts it on this little handlethe other thing this does is it's got aWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20little cushion to ityou can really grab ontoso for novice kids for kids for smallerkids I wish we had this when I startedshowing a lot of times you'll start kidsout with this the first couple yearsonce they get a little bigger strongerthe book will transition them over to aWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40regular show alter this will give kids alot of confidencelet's start now[Music]we talked about this a little bit indaily carejust to recap a comb we got the plasticWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00and we got the metal I really like tosend kids into the show ring with aplastic toothed combif these fall on the ground and a calfsteps on over you step on them we'regoing to hurt that plastic coat but thatcoma isn't going to stick up into youryour calf's hoof this is a lot safer toWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20use in the showthe other thing is a lot of times we putthese combs in our back pocket like wediscussed and put cab bumps into youit's going to hurt that comb but it'snot going to hurt you whether this one'sa metal one and it can bump into yourbackside and really hurt youWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40the equipmentnow one thing that I think is reallyimportant is where you scratch your capthe speed at which you scratchsoWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00[Music]there's two places you can scratch yourcaptainlikeall right up here on their chestI think we've got a transition intostretching a little more on that interms of the Chess ClubWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20keep in mind is and one of the questionswe had in our Facebook context wasit doesn't want to stand still in a showring how to keep them where they'll staya little more still so that was Katie'sWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40question it was how can we calm our calfin the ring if it gets too jumpy or isfascinated by every moving thing andthat's a common issue especially at thefirst show you go tobiggest thing that I see where cattlereally want to move around a bunchWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00the other thing I seeis the calf service the kids nervous toand the first thing we start to do whenwe get nervous we started scratchingmore we scratchwe start with this ranch back scratchrecord what that does it almost fires upWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20that cat claws you canone twoI will scratch again one twoWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40concentration show stick speedthe next thing I want to concentrate toWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00talk about is where do we stand inrelation to that cab this is a commonquestion because I feel like there's somany different ways of doing it andagain I can't emphasize enough thatshowmanship is there's a lot of personalpreference there's a lot of people thatdo it one way and there's a lot ofWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20people that do it another way yeahthe way I'm gonna explain to you thereasons why we do it the way we do itthis isthe Dave Allen has really shown me howto teach really wellI like kids part of their eyes or theWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40front of their nosehalf their belt buckle pointed at theirshoulderWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00that were coach willing to get too farthis way or they'll get too far thisanyway out here the problem with that isit looks good thing you can reallysilhouette that camp up the reasonWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20they're doing thatreally silhouetteour bodyWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40but what happens is if we get to coverup herewe see those back legs where I'mstandingso you like coach kids to dofor sure from their eyeballsWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00maybe you in front of their nosesomewhere in that camp up but we've beenalso at just a different marketWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20what happens a lot of times isand you have a foot without you evernoticing it that makes sense so we'rehere we gotabsolutely checkingWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40soalong with your position in relation toyou in the gapthing I think is really important is onething we go for a lot of years how muchkids keep their eye on the judge doesanybody everTheater heard thatI know I have a bunch of timesWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00or I think we need to be more or less iswe need to focus on bring awareness sowhat I mean by that is sometimes kidshave their eye on the judge but theirback legs are crossed so if that judgeis on the other end of the ring we needWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20to make sure that you're honed in onyour skill that you got set up but youdon't need to be looking at the judge ifhe's evaluatedtattle ten hands down from youhaving a awareness of where he's at andwhen he starts making his way backtowards you then you can kind of zeroback in on the judge make sure you'vegot your gas set we always want to beWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40bouncing back and forth you want to kindof have an idea where the cap is infront of you you want to have an ideawhere the judge is and you want to havean idea where youryour eye on the judge is super importantwe've got several other things that areimportant when we're talking about thatas wellWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00okay so again just for a facebook liveview as you want to reintroduce myselfI'm John Gallagher I'm on the honor showChild Life pigs today we're here inBelleville Texas we're at the AustinCounty Fairgrounds and we've justcompleted the daily care segment we'regoing oversee showmanship points beforeWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20we get into our contest here in a littlebit so now that's covered kind of someof the basics in terms of the rightequipment where we want to stand inrelation to the camp okay I want tocover now isa lot of timeswhen we give them a shot so that theyWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40want to start talkingbackone thing I like to do when we're firstcoaching kids on how to show is we wedon't even have a show stick in theirhand a lot of times we'll just make themstart leaving those gaps just how tolead them and we'll introduce the showsnack later the reason we do that is weWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00like to lead cattle into have you everheard of walking cattle into it sothere's two reasons we walk cattle intoit just demonstrated here that theminuteit's the most efficient way to set themup it's really quick the other reason wedo that is it's the way they look theWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20most natural so when we walk them intoit their weight is evenly proportionedon all four corners we can do it reallyquickandlocking them into it he talked aboutdaily care how the cattle daily carenutrition we talked about cattle arecreatures of habit when we talk aboutWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40showmanship showmanship happens at homeso it's you building that relationshipwith your calf and your body well to youso when we're looking at getting readyfor a show a lot of times we'll start acouple months out doing showmanship andwe'll practice for 20 minutes a dayWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00maybe three four or five times a week wecan when I talk about cattle beingcreatures of habit we can actually trainthemhe didn't stop 90% of time in thecorrect position but you have to do thathomework at home so I'm going to talk alittle bit leading them into itand then I'm going to talk about when weWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19do have to move a foot how we can dothat by puttingusing different pressure points anddoing it the most naturally kept realquick I think he touched on this alittle earlier ago but Natalie went tono tip first steer who swings away fromthe judge who doesn't like anyone in hisblind spot yes okay so that's a goodWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40question Joe I hear that question dipsup calves that want to swim away fromthe judge so this is a easy fix at homeif you have enough time what we do is welike to practice showmanshipdo you have the opportunity but if youcan have a parent come out and peoplethat get a lot of times it will come upWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00and they'll handle this capyou practically practice that at hometoo so one of us is kind of the Bobjudge that'll really help if you want tocome up on different anglesWatch at: 17:00 / 17:20[Music]can't used to wear he'll stand stillyou can tell where Lee's got a good jobat home and we've helped just handlethat campWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40do to make that scenario like a show athome really helps us so I hope thathelps Natalie is that the right name yepso Natalie if you can have one of yourbrother to your sisters aunt I'll go eggteacher you can have them come in andjust handle that cap a little bit that'sreally going to help get that cap usedWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00to having somebody walk around and getthem in a blind spot kind of change upthe scenario a little bit in that cat'sgonna get youso I'm gonna kind of demonstratestraight ahead but I wanna focus on andhe may not do it every timeWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20back to[Music]I'm working and I'm focused on his backtwo feetI want it to be the two classes feetthat are cautious to me which are goingto be a spread to the mangoes back to a stopWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40that we want to stop thisWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00Watch at: 19:00 / 19:20when I stop this cabwe're gonna have four feet obviously wehave this foot on the show side so thisis the judge the judge hereWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40use all of you on the stand so theydon'this heart show sideright here it's back show side to beslightly behind that then we want theshow side I like to be back little andthen the side on the exhibitorWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00so Rachel Rachel has a question abouthow that set up when your steer is inprofile position like that feet offsetdo you have to switch the offset backleg to whichever side the judge is onthat's a really good question the reasonwe call this the show side sideWatch at: 20:00 / 20:20because 90% of the time the judge isgoing to be on that side of the cap the10% that the judge spends on this sideprobably isn't but all he's gonna do ishe's maybe gonna walk behind this capand by the time you switch his feet theWatch at: 20:20 / 20:40judge is already going to be past youand one of the most subtractunattractive positions you can be in ismoving the foot so I coach kids to leavein there unless a judge comes over hereand starts camping out he's evaluatingthat after a considerable amount of timeI'd leave them there because usually theWatch at: 20:40 / 21:00judge just makes a circle it comes backthat makes sense so again I want you tokind of focus on when I'm leading theminto this I want you to kind of focus onhow I'm trying to stop these hang twolegsand if we need to I'm going to go overhow to move back with their halter onthose front teamWatch at: 21:00 / 21:20[Music]I'd love to leave this cap into it and Iknow that there's a camp Bob at thebleachers where you're sittingWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40I'm actuallyI'm gonna stopI could stop leave I'm just going toturn the other directionWatch at: 21:40 / 22:00I'm going to notice as I'm leading theminto itI'm actually scratchWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20thatnow we decided we need to move a footwe're gonna doWatch at: 22:20 / 22:40I'm gonna bring it this wayto our hand the reason the other reasonwe want to do that isbut we're going to use a little pressureif I want this foot to go backwards I'mWatch at: 22:40 / 23:00going to use a little pressure back onmy show halter here just twisting mywrist and I'm going to tell them whichfoot to move I put hardly any pressure Iwas just telling in which good I wantedto move I want that to come forward I'mgonna put a little pressure forward andI'm gonna move that foot forward thatWatch at: 23:00 / 23:20makes sense now we have a hold of thathalter up here and we're holding it likethis we can't use that pressure of thatmoving the whole head that makes sensethat's the other reason we like kidsright down here we always say choke upon the halter kind of like to do inbaseball choke up on the halter what Imean by that is just up here real closeWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40so we've got two questions real quick onthis stance Michelle wants to know ifpeppers are set up the same way itsteers that's real good question sotypically like when we were drawing onthat board over there sometimes a headif you can kind of show my feetsometimes a heifer since they don't needto be as masculine looking we like toWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00just set them a little bit more offsetthere's two reasons we like to do thattoo when you set them offset the reasonwe do that iswhat that does isWatch at: 24:00 / 24:20we've got that camp like thiseven more the other thing it does is itexposesfor other developmentif something shows off that bellyWatch at: 24:20 / 24:40we're up or hip a little bit more so yesto answer your question on a heiferwe're going to maybe do it a little bitmore exaggerated offset and maybe not aswide both counts mosttempers need to be offset but a steerneeds to be wider than a pepper a littleless offset and then Kristin wants toWatch at: 24:40 / 25:00confirm that the front two feet are notsquare they're slightly offset correctand what I mean by that what was yourname dress down rested so what do I meanby that is the front two feet picturethis my legs look skinnier here allwe're doing is we want to keep them aWatch at: 25:00 / 25:20little bit offseteverybody kind of think of everythingfrom the profile we don't really want tosee a gap between those legs like we didthe backwards I like to see them aWatch at: 25:20 / 25:40little offset and again every calf isgoing to be set a little bit differentthere might be something and your calfhas and we need to tweak down a littlebitconsensus 98% of them that's how we liketo sell any other quick questions soagain my name is John Gallagher we areWatch at: 25:40 / 26:00here to the train like a champion showclinic in Belleville Texas I was excitedto join you on our Facebook live pagehere with honor shout out if you haveany questions feel free as you'reviewing this video to take them into thecomment box we'd be glad we're going togo back in we're going to answer everyquestion we're glad you joined us we'reWatch at: 26:00 / 26:20going to get on with the rest of ourclinic thank
