Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20(hard rock music)- She would stand still for a minuteuntil you got your foot in thestirrup and then she would take off.Never got her to stand still the whole time. Not what I was looking for.Oh (bleep). She's going to hurt both of us.Watch at: 00:20 / 00:40- Most people want to fix theirbehavioral problem from on the saddle.I want to do it from the ground where I'm safe.I'm gonna make that rear-end hustle. That's easy. You wanna move your feet, that's fine, but your gonna move them on my terms.Move that rear-end!(record scratches)Well, that was interesting.- (gasp)- It wouldn't do that again. - (bleep)(bright upbeat music)Watch at: 00:40 / 01:00- I'm Clinton Anderson and I havea method for training horses.Getting horses to behave is simple. It's training people that's the real trick.Watch at: 01:00 / 01:20Join me as I tackle some of the most challengingsituations with problem horses and with problem owners.(upbeat music)Watch at: 01:20 / 01:40(country music)To be able to enjoy a horse, you got to be able to get on him.But to do that, you better have a horse respectful.Otherwise, it can be pretty dangerous.Watch at: 01:40 / 02:00(glass breaks) (bleep)(country music)- She's a registered Tennessee walker. She's eight years old. And I got hercause she was pretty and she was a gated horse. And at my age, I just want something that'sa slow ride now. Don't want to do anything wild. When I was a kid, I had a horse at thirteenWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20and kept her til thirty, and she was the onlyhorse I've ever had. So this is like, the second horse, but she is a little wild. She has little issues we need to work through.Come on!Seems like everything is just like she's abeginner, like a colt. I bought a round pen,Watch at: 02:20 / 02:40and I've been trying to work her in theround pen before I rode her andit kinda calmed her down. I started bytrying to tie her up and get on and off. Of course thatworked cause she had nowhere to go.Tried putting her in the round penand doing the whoa and pulling back on the reinswhen I was trying to get on.She would stand still for a minute until youWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00got your foot in the stirrup and halfway upand she would take off.(dramatic music)Never got the end result, never got her tostand still the whole time. Not what I was looking for.(dramatic music)Watch at: 03:00 / 03:20(sigh)It scares me for her that she's gonna hurt herselfand it scares me for me that something is gonna happenand she's gonna hurt both of us.I just want us to both be safe, really. This is what I'm looking for here.(country music)Watch at: 03:20 / 03:40- A horse that walks off when you go to get on himis just plain disrespectful and dangerous. You wouldn't go to get in your car would you mate,if it was moving down the road, you'd stop and put the handbrake on.I wanna teach my horses to stand still,be respectful when I go to get on him. It's a safety thing for me and the horse.Watch at: 03:40 / 04:00Well if you remember on last week's show, we had Melissa.Melissa good to have you on this show again, mate. And her horse, Star, and both of them had some problems.(dramatic music)Watch at: 04:00 / 04:20We worked through the trailering, didn't we?My method is all about respect, isn't it?Getting control. Getting that horse to move his feetforwards, backwards, left and right. And after we did that for about an hour, she really changedher overall attitude.(upbeat music)Watch at: 04:20 / 04:40A bit further.Okay.Well, there's more issues here, isn't there? There's more things that need some attention.(rock music)- [Melissa] When I try to get on her,she wants to go before I'm in the saddle.- How do you get on her, does somebody hang on to her,or what do you do?- It's the rolling mount.Watch at: 04:40 / 05:00- Right, you kinda mount on the go is that right?Okay. You just show me exactly what you wouldnormally do with her. I just wanna see kindahow you interact with her, how she interacts with you.- (shh) No.Be still.- Okay, and so then how do you get on then?Show me how you'd get on.Watch at: 05:00 / 05:20- Be still (shh). Quit that.No.Whoa-- Like that?- Yes.- Okay, so she's walking off as you're trying to get on.That's more of what she does there, correct?- Yes.- And every once in a while you'll get luckyWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40- (laugh)- And she'll stand there and let you get off.- Yes.- Okay mate, why don't you hop down bring here over hereand let me mess with her. Most people wanna try to fix their horse's behavioralproblems from on the saddle.I wanna fix it on the ground.Okay, so let me get started here.(surf rock music)Watch at: 05:40 / 06:00(dramatic piano music)Watch at: 06:00 / 06:20(hard rock music)Watch at: 06:20 / 06:40Her not wanting to stand stillWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00is a combination of a couple different things.Watch at: 07:00 / 07:20It's a combination of a lack of respect,Watch at: 07:20 / 07:40she's not respecting you. When you say whoa,Watch at: 07:40 / 08:00she's taking that for granted, isn't she?- RightWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20- The first step in fixing this problem is again, going back to the source. The horse did notrespect the human being. And the horse did not how to move his feetforwards, backwards, left and right. She's obviously using what? The reactiveside of her brain. She's wanting to fidget. She gets nervous, doesn't she?She gets nervous and wants to fidget, and she doesn't want to stand still. The reason why that was happening isWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40the horse had no respect for his owner. So sometimes, when training horsesyou've got to go back to the source of the problem, fix that and then what you originally thoughtthe problem was, well actually, it'd be disappearedand it'll be gone. It won't even be there anymore. So basically what I wanna do is,before I actually ask to get on her,Watch at: 08:40 / 09:00I wanna get her in the right frame of mind. So, how would we get her to use thethinking side of her brain?- Work her.- Work her, but working her means what?Moving her feet. - Moving her feet.- Okay, so before I try to get on her I'm gonnaspend some time just moving here feet aroundand making standing still will look what? Easy- Oh, like the trailer- Like the trailer.Watch at: 09:00 / 09:20Come on, move your feet.To the other side. (clicking)I can't train a horse if there's no energy in the feet.I want her, that as soon as I back her off...I want her feeling safer on the trailer, then what she does off the trailer.Watch at: 09:20 / 09:40Does that make sense? Okay so let me get started here. So, initially I might just do something simple here. And I might just move her rear end around.(rock music)Just move her rear end around.Just use the stick and disengage your hind quarters. So the first thing I did is I started to yieldthe horses hind quarters, and basically move his feet.Watch at: 09:40 / 10:00But the difference is now I'm the one calling the shots,I'm the one moving the feet.Just go chase it a little bit. Move that rear end.If you wanna move your feet, I'm gonna move thembut it's gonna be on my terms.(rock music)She wants to move it around, just go chase it a little bit.Move that rear end.Watch at: 10:00 / 10:20- (gasp)When the horse flipped over backwards, I have neverseen anything like that. I was shocked.Part of me didn't know they could even do that.- I didn't worry too much about it, well first of allthere's nothing I can do about it, it already happened.Watch at: 10:20 / 10:40And second of all, I'm not worried about the horserearing up, because it only reared up becauseit's reacting. If I gain control of a horse's feetand I get him to respect me, he won't wannareact in panic anymore.- That might break that rearing up habit toobecause now she's scared that she mightWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00flip over every time she does that so that might bea good thing that she taught herself a lesson.- So then she reared over backwards just then.I just went and caught her, and what am I gonna do now?Go back and move her feet again.Don't worry about that, that's her problem. If she's big enough and ugly enough toWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20fall over backwards, that's her problem.Move those feet. Move those feet.Move those feet.It looked a lot worse than it was, almost fell over.Get him up and get him back to business.Move those hind quarters.Move those feet. And I just change, and move her around this way.Watch at: 11:20 / 11:40Move these feet.There.There. Now, I'm just gonna get in beside her hereand make this look easy. I might act likeI'm gonna put my foot in the stirrup. You see that?Make standing still, look easy.Watch at: 11:40 / 12:00I might pull on the saddle a little bit here.Stimulate as if I'm gonna get on.Tighten up my girth a little bit.Might put my foot in the stirrup. Get ready. Now she wants to move aroundI'm gonna go move her around.Watch at: 12:00 / 12:20Hey, you wanna move, come on now let's move.Pretty soon it made standing still look easy. But I'm gonna make you hustle,I'm gonna make you work, I'm gonna make ituncomfortable for you.(rock music)Watch at: 12:20 / 12:40(dramatic music)Watch at: 12:40 / 13:00Check out our latest catalog from Down Under HorsemanshipWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20it's filled with beautiful imagery and in-depthWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40information on all the products used in this show.Visit our website, or call this number and we'llsend it to your door free of charge.(music)Watch at: 13:40 / 14:00I want him to think that standing still is a rewardand moving his feet is hard work. Now she wants to walk off, I step down.I immediately move those feet around.Watch at: 14:00 / 14:20Move those feet around.Move those feet around. And I go back, leave her alone.I want him to think standing still is a rewardand moving his feet is hard work.Ah, I might try something different.I might back her up (clicking)Watch at: 14:20 / 14:40Tap her on the chest.Make her back up.Horses are forward-aholics by general naturethey're always thinking forward. By backing him upit got him to think about me, and it alsomade him realize that, man standing stillthat's a reward.I want her to think standing still is a lot easierWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00than moving around.Back her up (clicking)So backing the horse up also counter-balancedthe horse's desire to wanna go forward.Go forward go forward.Watch at: 15:00 / 15:20Ah, good girl.(brava)Now instead of getting on, I'm gonna get off.She thinks every time somebody steps up in that saddleWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40that she has to go somewhere.I'm gonna say, hey I might get off.But you don't have to worry about trying to go somewkere.Okay?Get back on.(triumphant music)Okay. Now, when I walk off right now what would I do?Watch at: 15:40 / 16:00Get off.Good girl.I might go ahead and get back on again.I wanna show her, that standing stillis the best option.Watch at: 16:00 / 16:19- When I saw Clinton working with her andhe said if she wanted to move her feet well thenshe's gonna move her feet. And it justclicked in my mind.- Like she went to walk off, I'd step off.I'd yield her hind quarters.I'd disengage that rear end.I might back her up a little bit.Start it again.Watch at: 16:19 / 16:40- You wanna keep moving, keep moving. And in the end, you wanna rest?Well then you can rest and I'll get on and off. It's just like a common sense thing but untilsomebody shows you that it doesn't click in your brain.- If you sent her to me I would ride her for a week.I'd do nothing but ground work for a week.I'd prepare her so that when I start riding herWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00a week from now, she won't wanna walk off.Remember what I said? It's preparation isn't it?I didn't make the horse stand still,I made it the easiest option for him to stand stilland then eventually he thought it was his idea.Right I want you to come over here mate, have a go.Watch at: 17:00 / 17:20She gave me a bit of a workout.(rock music)Watch at: 17:20 / 17:40(hard rock music)Watch at: 17:40 / 18:00- [Narrator] Step up your horsemanship withWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20the Clinton Anderson Method. Good girl, run in there.Run run run run run, run! You yourself, run. That' it, bend her head towards the saddle. That's it, disengage that rear end.There.Now stop- (phew)Well when Clinton does it, it looks really easy,Watch at: 20:00 / 20:20but when you do it, there's a lot of things thatyou have to keep under control at one time.- Now she wants to move, what are you gonna do?Move her feet!Come on, move her feet, bend her head.Move those feet, move those feet.Move those feet.Move those feet, now do it the other direction.Bend her head the other way.Quickly. Get in there.Watch at: 20:20 / 20:40Because we moved the horse's feet, and done a lotof change of direction, he had given us theleadership in the relationship. He'd given us the control. We're number one he was number two. Now, go to get on her, go to get halfway on her.Okay? And if she goes to move you immediately step down.Okay? There you go.Now hop down.Watch at: 20:40 / 21:00When a horse gives you the leadership rolehe becomes submissive. He becomes a willing partner.Get on. There you go!Rub on her neck, rub on her neck. That's it. If she goes to walk off what are you gonna do?- Hop off and do it again.- Step off and move her feet again.I wanted that horse to stand still and relaxWatch at: 21:00 / 21:20even if he wasn't tired, because he knewthat standing still was what was the expectedbehavior that he had to perform. She's breathing, a little bit heavy butshe's not tired. You might be tired. Okay?- (laugh)- She ain't tired. She is standing still becauseshe is using the thinking side of her brain. You've gained her respect by what?Moving her feet.Remember in the trailering, once we gained her respectWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40she got quiet didn't she?Is she quiet now?- Yes.- So getting her tired has got nothing to do with this. And the other reason she's standing still is becausewe made standing still look like, what? The best option.- Yes.- We said, if you wanna move, let's move.We used a little reverse psychology didn't we?Watch at: 21:40 / 22:00- Yes.- Then we said, would you like to stand still? And she said, thank god I'd love to stand stillI've been dreaming about standing still whenyou get on me all day.Her not standing still was a symptom of a cause. Her not getting on the trailer was a symptom of a cause. All horse's problems come from a lack of respector fear. And that's one thing that I try to getacross to everybody. Whatever you thinkWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20your problem is is not your problem. It's a symptom of a cause. The horse's either lack of respect or fear.If you're unlucky your horse has both.- The problem with her not standing still wasprobably me, but again, I didn't knowhow to correct it.- That's it, get a little bend. You notice now she's not throwing her headin the air, is she?Watch at: 22:20 / 22:40- Nah- Remember when I first took a hold of the bit she'dthrow her head up in the air.- Yeah- That's why she flipped over backwardscause she was real still. You feel how she's bending now?- She's got it now. (laugh)- Now, stop and get on her. Drop the stick.Just get on her.You don't even have a hold of the reins now,Watch at: 22:40 / 23:00look how confident you are now.Good girl.Look at the difference.(surf music)- Amazing.Once again, Clinton Anderson has fixed the problem.Watch at: 23:00 / 23:20- A lot of people just get on their horseand immediately go somewhere and theycause half these problems.- Right.- Horses are creatures of habit, if you just get on and goshe's thinks, okay I'm supposed to go.Get on and off a few times for a few daysand teach her, just because you get on doesn'tmean the car is going anywhere.Look at her, licking her lips, she's quiet.Your horse wants to be good she justWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40needs an effective leader.- I'm excited to get home and start working on it.- Look at that mate, standing there like a statute.Rub on her. That's good job, are you happy with that?- Yes, absolutely. - Congratulations.- Thank you so much.- Well mate I hope you've enjoyed that.Yet again, we've proved to you again, if you followWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00the method it doesn't matter what problem your horsehas, you can fix it.
