iswhatsapp well whatsapp is acommunication tool that allows you tosend messages to others it also allowsyou to call others and it also allowsWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40you to have video chats with others soyou can see the other person in realtime and with all three of thoseyou could either communicate with oneother person or with groups of people soyou have lots of options now whatsapporiginally comes from what's up as a wayto kick off of communication now why usewhatsapp there are many otherWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00communication tools out there whatsappis one of the most dominant and one ofthe most used communication tools andpart of the reason why is whatsappreally came to be during the time whenmost people use simply their cell phonetext messaging or their cell phonecalling to stay in touch with others nowat the time one of the problems was ifWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20you wanted to text message people a lotcell phone companies charged a lot ofmoney for that and one point in time itwas five ten cents per text message alsoif you wanted to call people in othercountries and this is still a problemtoday cell carriers charge a lot ofmoney to do that with whatsapp what theydo is they run through the data on yourphone so they don't charge you by phoneWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40call they don't charge you by textmessage in fact there's no charge at allit simply leverages your data and sothey got the cost so low so dramaticallylow to stay in touch with others peopleflocked to whatsapp now the second thingthat really drove whatsapp success iswhen you sign up for whatsapp you enteryour phone number and by entering yourWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00phone number what they do is that's yourunique identifier on whatsapp and sowhen you join what's happened you launchthe app what they'll do is they'll lookat all the contacts on your phone andall their phone numbers and then it'lltake those phone numbers to look at allthe whatsapp members and see if thereare any matches when you start usingwhatsapp what happens then is you haveWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20this immediate network of people youcould call now those two things reallyhelps propel whatsapp to become one ofthe dominant messaging playersalright well enough talk why don't wejump in and I'll show you fourstop how you can get what's happened theway we're gonna get whatsapp is on aniPhone which I have today we're gonna goto the App Store but if you have anWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40Android phone you could follow alongjust as easily you're gonna go to thePlay Store to get whatsapp once welaunch whatsapp the interface whetheryou're on an iPhone or an Android phoneis pretty similar so either way you'llbe able to follow along so what I'mgoing to do is first off we're gonna goI'm gonna click into the App Store andwithin the App Store the easiest way toWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00get to whatsapp is to simply search forwhatsapp and so in the bottom right handcorner I see the search icon or themagnifying glass I'm gonna go ahead andlet's click on that and I'm gonna clickinto the search field and now I'm simplygoing to type in whatsapp you could typeit as one word you don't need any spacesno apostrophes simply whatsapp and thenI'm gonna go ahead and search for it andWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20the top result is the whatsapp messengernow what you could do is you couldeither click to install it in my case Ialready have it so I'm gonna click onopen but if you don't have it yet clickon install I'm gonna go ahead and clickon open and this will launch what's appand here drops me in the app and nowwhat I want to do is I want to walkWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40through how you can use it and we'regonna start on the leftmost pivot on thebottom bar the one titled status and nowwhat status is and this is simply a wayyou could project out or communicate toall your friends what your currentstatus is and I just left it as thedefault one I don't have a status butyou could take a photo if you want someWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00photo associated with status or youcould click on this pencil and you couldtype in status so I'll go ahead and typesomething now that I've sent it out whatit'll do is it'll keep this status for24 hours and then it'll reset so it's away where he could communicate out toyour friends just what you're currentlyup to or what you're doing or maybe youwant to say hey I'm available now or I'mWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20not available so whatever you want touse that for you could communicate outto others so now what we're gonna do iswe're gonna click into the next pivot onthe bottom bar and this one is titledcalls now this is where you're gonnamake all your phone calls withinwhatsapp and so here you'll see that Ihave a record of three recent calls thatI've made if you've missed any calls IWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40could also click on miss and I could seea record of that and what you can do isif you want to callon an iPhone in the top right handcorner you'll see a phone icon with aplus if you click on that that willallow you to set up or basically createa new call so I'm gonna click on thatand what that'll do is it'll open up allyour contacts and within this call viewWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00what you'll see is you have a phone iconand also a video icon clicking on aphone on the phone icon will kick off aphone call clicking on the video iconwill kick off a video call so dependingon whether you want someone to see yourbeautiful face or not you can choosewhich one you want to click on they alsohave something called a new group callWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20and I'm gonna click on that what'sinteresting is you can immediately kickoff a call with up to seven participantsso it's kind of like a conference callthat you could kick off so a nice waywhere you let's say you have you know afew kids and maybe you want to call themall at once and talk to them at once youcould go ahead and do that or you couldsee who's ignoring you and who's not andwho picks up first when you call soWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40that's how you could kick off a groupcall so pretty nice calling capabilitieswhat you can also do here at the top ifI click in the search field and I couldalso type in a name and I'm gonna goahead and type in my mom's name and soif I click on her what that'll do isit'll kick off a phone call and you haveyour standard controls of speaker muteand also hang up and you can turn itWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00into a video call now the thing is I'mon the West Coast my mom's on the EastCoast so it's a bit later out there andso I feel bad for calling her so Ishould probably hang up so now what I'mgonna do is this is the call view now ifwe look back at the bottom pivot thereis the camera so I'm gonna click on thecamera and what I could do is I'll takea quick picture of myself it's a littleblurry but what I can do is I'm gonnaWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20swipe up you could apply differentfilters so very much like Instagrammaybe I want myself to pop a little moreand on the top right hand corner youhave different controls where you couldflip you could crop you could throwdifferent stickers on top so maybe alittle coffee mug for some random reasonyou could also put text on top so I'mjust gonna say hi and I could go aheadWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40and I could even I could you can evenannotate this photo with pens so maybe Iwant to circle my face once again Idon't know why but you can do that andthen what you could do is I could typein a caption and I could go ahead andsend this to someone and I could selecta person I want to send this to so Iwill go ahead and I'll send this to mymom so she could get a photo of what Ilooklike so within the camera view the niceWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00thing there is that lets you createcontent first and then choose who youwant to send it to now what I'm gonna dois we're gonna jump over on the bottombar again we're gonna jump one more overand we're gonna go into chats so here Isee my chat view so here what I could dois I could see all of my existing chatsWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20if I have any what I could do is in thetop right hand corner there's an icon tocreate a new chat so I'm gonna click onthat once I click on that I could goahead and set up a new chat so what Icould do is I could click on anindividual to start chatting with oneindividual or what I could do is I couldcreate a group and with this groupunlike a phone call I could set up aWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40chat group with up to 256 users so I cancommunicate with a lot of people somaybe you have a really big family maybeyou have kids and they have and theyhave kids and so maybe you're agrandparent and you've got a massivefamily chances are it's under 256 andyou can stay in touch with all of themso here I could go in and I could selectmultiple people if that's what I wouldlike to do but I'm gonna go ahead andWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00cancel that you have two things withinhere you could also simply click on newgroup or broadcast list so if I click onnew group that brings me back to thisgroup view a broadcast list is somewhatit sounds like a group but not quitewith a broadcast list it's more yourcommunicating out and you don't want thedifferent individuals who you'reWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20communicating out to to communicate withone another if they respond it'll simplygo to u-verse with a group everyone cancommunicate with one another so itdepends on how you want to communicatemaybe you have a big family and you justwant to communicate out but you don'twant them to talk to one another you cando that too so you're what I'm going todo is I'm going to click into theconversation with my mom and show yousome of the things that you could doWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40within here even from within the chatview once again in the top right handcorner you have the ability to kick offa video call you also have the abilityto kick off a phone call so you could dothat from within a chat maybe you startwith a chat you start messaging back andforth and then it turns out that it'staking too long to type everything backand forth you could quickly jump toother forms of communicationWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00whatsapp makes that really easy so hereI'm going to go down what you could dois I could click in here I could type intext if I click on the plus icon I couldinsert documents I could use the camerapick existing photos from my photolibrary I could send my vote my locationmy contact information so lots ofdifferent things I could share I couldWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20also share different icons or gif ease Icould also load the camera and if Iclick on the microphone I could recordaudio and then send an audio clip somaybe I don't want to call but I stillwant to say hey I love you mom or I missyou hey I'll call you tomorrow so Icould say I could say things like thatthose are all the things you could doWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40within a chat message I'm gonna go backand the last thing we're gonna look atnow is over on the bottom right-handcorner the last pivot that we have isthe one called settings so I'm gonna goahead and click into settings and thefirst thing that we see here is mylovely picture at the top and I'm gonnaclick into that here I could edit myname I could edit my photo I also haveWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00my phone number which I've blurred outotherwise I might get a bunch of phonecalls and I have some other things inhere where I can manage my account mychat my notification settings I can eventell a friend about what's app alrightwell that is a very quick tutorial ofhow you can use whatsapp to stay intouch with family friends
