competitors that havecome out over the years it is still themost successful and the one with themost strategic depth despite this it'snot that hard to learn and it's veryrewarding to do so there have been a fewWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40different digital adaptations of magicgathering over the years and a lot ofthem have been very strong but to methere's a sort of um it's like aGoldilocks thing right this one is toohot this one is too cold Magic theGathering arena is the oatmeal that'sjust perfect okay I think I'm stretchingthis metaphor a little bit but it's justWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00hitting that sweet spot because it isthe full and complete magic experienceit is the full and complete deckbuilding experience but in a reallyslick really fantastic user interfacethat is just a dream to use I playing Magic theWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20Gathering in 4th edition during the IceAge block so ice age alliance and was itheartlands back then technically they'vereplaced heartlands now for like like aretro redo of the block they've replacedheartlands with a different set becauseheartlands was a little on the weakerside when it came out but iceland anWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40alliance were such good expansions backthen anyway and every now and again sothey come out with a new version of thebase game so this is a core set for 2020so these are the basic cards thatbasically house the best way to describeit these give you your baselineexperience these are the core cards thatsort of need to exist and then theWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00expansions 10 tad wacky stuff with veryvery very different mechanics and theyhave blocks that cycle in and out ofstandard play there's also well backwhen I used to play it was called tier 1to 1.5 into your 2 but basically there'sa sort of current standard block andthen there's various historical blockswhich is really nice for various gameWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20balance and keeping the game fresh ifthings come in and out but anyway let'sopen one of these packs so in magicsGavin arena when you open a pack it'sgot five common cards in it two uncommonand one rare card the one thing that Ireally like about this as well is as youopen packs you will also get these wildcards so uncommon and rare wild cardsWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40and as you open packs you'll see you'llsee some progression towards that andsometimesa perfect timing thank you game god it'salmost like it's scripted this sometimesyou will also rather than a card byitself you will directly get a wild cardso as you open packs you will get thesewild card or progress towards wild cardsWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00so every xed pack you will get a somewild card for aggression but initial tatsometimes you will get this and what youcan do is you can these you can use tocraft any card you might be missing soyou don't have to rely on too much RNGwhat does this thing scheming symmetryI haven't played matching one so I startin fourth edition I really piqued isWatch at: 05:00 / we're gonna play aroundusing a deck versus the AI to talk abouthow the game works before we do any sortof deck construction thing but the thingto remember about Magic the Gathering iswhat I've been amazed by it sinceWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00I've started playing is the rules haveconsistently got cleaner and cleaner youknow when I started with fourth editionand then fifth edition came out with acleaner set of rules sixth edition cameout and cleaned up a lot more rules ohmy godsixth edition I think is the one wherethey got rid of interrupts andintroduced the the instant stack or theWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20effect stack oh my god so much better itwas amazing how much cleaned up andsimplified the rules without literallywithout costing a single ounce ofstrategic depth everything you could dobefore you could still do but it withsuch a cleaner system turns out the gameWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40didn't need interrupts which is anothercard type we'll talk about card typeswhen we actually get into the deck thingum the game didn't need interrupts youcould get rid of an entire class ofcards they all just got like real ableto be instance instead of interrupts andit didn't change the game at all and yetmade the rules just so much cleaner andthat continues to be the case at someWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00point I don't remember seventh or eighthedition they changed it so that damageeffects don't go on the cue and it'slike it was at time I was like whatthat's so weird and then it turns out ohit literally makes no true difference togameplay but the rules were cleaner whathappened anyway I've just been amazed bythese guys how they've continued to makeWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20the game fresh over the last 25 yearsit's I mean it's the granddaddy of allCCGs and I will never stop saying goodthings about magic gathering I have beenaddicted a little bit in the past soanyway so yes despite the fact thatthey've been you know cleaning up andeverything like that it is still by farthe game with the most amount of depththat exists period let's go ahead andWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40play around and then we'll talk abouthow the game plays so there are avariety different modes of gameplay thatyou can do in Magic the Gathering arenaand actually you can toggle this foreven more game modes over here for alittle bit more variation yeah it's justit's just nutso over here and but we'regonna play a bot match over here and theWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00nice thing about a bot match is thatagain you can do these daily quests andget gold just by playing against thebots now my quest right now I have twothings just happen to work out that waytwo quests that require me to cast X nowred or white spells so let's go aheadand let's play the red deck because it'sWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20got dragons in it and who doesn't lovedragons these are five starter decksover here that you're gonna get when youget the game so you start with a bunchof cards all ready to go and yeah sowe're gonna play this one each one ofthese decks is a single color there's noreason that you are limited to a singlecolor though when you build decks youmake your own custom deck you can put IWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40mean you can have all five colorspresent in it nothing is stopping youfrom doing that and in fact many of thestrongest decks that exists actuallythese days I suspect all of thestrongest decks that exists are multicolored decks you know at least 2/3 isfairly typical the third one might bemore secondary might be a little bit ofWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00a splash like you might have a deckthat's mostly white and red but withjust a little splash of black in thereor something like that um here's ourstarting hand so a medicine gathering soyou have a deck of 60 cards technicallyif you play the paper version you canmake decks that have more than 60 cardsyou generally don't want to do that youactually want the smallest tightest deckWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20possible because let's say you have athousand card deck some cards in anygiven situation are gonna be better thanothers if you had a thousand card deckthe chance of you drawing the card youwant is gonna be very low whereas if youhave a sixty card deck which is theminimum size for a standard deck you aregonna have a much tighter deck that youcan your draw your combos more oftenWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40because generally speaking you want somesort of synergistic combo ish mechanicgoing on your deck and so you want asmall TechNet type type deck you canhave up to four copies of each card inyour deckexcept basic land you can have anynumber of them so basic land there's onebasic land for each color and that givesWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00you mana of that color so we're playinga pure red deck here so the only landswe've got in here are mountains whichgenerate red mana for us and all ourcards will be red cards although I thinkwe may have some artifacts in our deckas well which are colorless here's ourstarting hands so we draw seven cardsone of the neat things about arena and IWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20don't believe any previous digitalversion of magic has done thiswhat and you can't you couldn't do thisin real life it simply wouldn't work inbehind the scenes when you're playing astandard game best of one as I don'tthink it applies to the best two out ofthree but the best of one behind thescenes what the game does is it actuallydraws two starting hands two differentWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40starting hands and then it gives you theone that has a number of land closest tothe average likely for your deck so inyour deck you're gonna have a certainamount of sort of spell cards and acertain amount of basic land cards andbased on that with a seven card handyour average will be let's say aboutWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00three land card is how many land you'reexpected to have in any seven cards soit'll draw two starting hands and giveyou the one that is closest to theaverage that means that typically youwill start with three land in your handif you have a normal amount of land inthere and you're slightly slightly lesslikely but still you know fairly likelyWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20to start with two or four land in hereso we only started with two which meansthere's a possibility we might be a bitshort on mana which would be kind ofsucky because it could stop us fromdeveloping our hand very aggressivelybut it so happens every card that we'vegot in our hand other than one is onlygonna cost us two mana the cost of aWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40card is in top right corner this dreadhorn Arcanist cost two mana to cast onehas to be read the other can be of anycolor that's what that means the Emberhauler needs to read mana Loftus DragonQueen costs a whopping six mana to putinto play or mana mana or mana you knowWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00up to you six mana - which must be readthere are cards that are multicoloredthey would be like oh you need one blueand one black and three of any othermana to cast the spell you'll see stufflike that happen but not in this deckbecause it's a pure red so I'm gonnakeep this I could mulligan what wouldhappen is I would draw a new hand andWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20that my starting hand I would only havesix cards instead so if I mulligan butI'm gonna go ahead and keep those that'sgonna be okay also I didn't know to lookat my opponent is starting first so I'mplaying at Sparky here the AI Sparky isnot terribly intimidating so very easyto practice and really easy to burn outthose daily quests without havingWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40- you know play against a human if youif you're if you still feel like you'restarting off in you're shy I do have tosay the true experience of any of thesecard games and magic in particular playagainst a human being I mean that is thetrue experience all right so now it'sour turn at the start of your turn youdraw card the ax technically there's theupkeep and draw step so if some cardsWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00will have an upkeep and and upkeep it'salso when you untap stuff and then youdraw a card if you are the first playerokay if so at the start of the game youflip a coin to determine who goes firstthe player who goes first doesn't draw acard in the first turn so Sparkiestarted with seven cards and his/her/itsWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20hand will go with his Sparkie startedwith seven cards in his hand and didn'tdraw on his first turn so all he did isplay at a mountain so apparentlySparky's gonna be playing a red deck aswell and now he's got six cards in therewe on the other hand did draw on ourfirst to go so we currently have eightcars in our hand we are getting a notethat if we at the end of our turn we mayWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40have to discard down seven cards is thehand limit however you can have morethan seven cards in your hand until theend of your turn at which point you haveto discard if somehow on Sparky's turn Imanaged to draw twenty cards I get tostart my turn with still twenty cards inWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00my hand that's fine it's not until theend of my turn I have to discard whatyou kind of need on every turn you canplay one and only one land so I willplay a mountain boom done and then myturn ends because I literally can't playanything so you can only put one basicland in on your turn and that limits howWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20quickly things can develop Sparky didn'tplay anything with the second mountaineither Sparky might have a reallyexpensive hand going on interesting so Idrew another mountain so I got two in myhand I will play one of them and now Ihave a handful of cards I can play I'mreally happy I drew a mountain becauseyou know at least I won't be stuck at -I still need at least one more to beWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40able to eventually cast the erraticCyclops which cost me four mana one ofwhich must be read but for now I can putdown one of my other cards dread harmArcanist has a lot of text let's ignoremost of the text for a secondso this costume Anna one of which mustbe read the bottom right corner thereyou can see the basic statistics of thisWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00card it is a 1/3 it has an attack of 1and a toughness of 3 so if the dreadHorn arcanist takes 3 points of damageit will die unlike some other card gamesyou may have played damage in Magic theGathering does not persist between turnsat the end of my turnall my creatures healed to full so ifWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19the arc mistakes to damage at the end ofmy turn he heals back up to 3 perioddone an attack is how much damage itdoes in battle then it's got a bunch oftext here so it's got trampled which inthe ability we'll talk about a littlebit laterwhenever dread Horn arcanists attacksyou may cast target instant or sorcerycard to converted mana cost less thanWatch at: 16:19 / 16:40equal to the dread hordes and Arcanistpower from your graveyard without payingits mana cost okay there's a lot of textnow the red horde Alchemist arcanist isa rare card it's got a little gold andsymbol let me find another card here toshowcase ok goblin instigator see oh Ican't I can't mouse over because it goesaway see on like the right hand side ofWatch at: 16:40 / 17:00this card sort of in the middle it's gotthe m-19 in there that tells you whatset this card is from the blackbackground tells you it's common theEmber hauler is from it says m20 this isfrom the 20/20 corset and it's silverwhich tells you it's uncommon and thenoh there we goLaw Office over here is from the 2019Watch at: 17:00 / 17:20corset m-19 but it's gold because it's arare dread Horne assistant is also arare that's a gold symbol from aparticular expansion and the cards fromthe expansions tend to have a much morecomplicated effect an extra text butWatch at: 17:20 / 17:40basically the arcanist here says I cancast spells from my graveyardwhat's the graveyard your library isyour deck of cards so the cards Ihaven't drawn yet this is the libraryyour discard pile right now neither oneof us have anything our discard pilethat is your graveyard so he lets meplay spells from my graveyard it's worthnoting that other than land basicallyWatch at: 17:40 / 18:00everything else in magic barring acouple of exceptions our spellsso this ember hauler which is what I'mgoing to put into playright now which costume ana isn't a 2/2creature is a summoning spell i willcast the spell to summon this emberhauler and then once the spell hascompleted assuming it wasn't counteredWatch at: 18:00 / 18:20by my opponent which would be somethingif Sparky was playing blue I would haveto be somewhat nervous about becauseblue is like manipulation blue is alsothe color you play if you're a big jerkfacebecause because no one likes playingends blue because blue is like oh bluesgonna like bounce your creatures back inyour hand or you try to cast a spell OhWatch at: 18:20 / 18:40who's gonna counter that spell ah red isthe color of like pure unbridledaggressiongenerally speaking red also has a lot ofcards that deal direct damage so shockis a spell that deals two damage to anytarget I can use this hit Sparky both ofus by the way start at 20 hit points ifwe get down to zero or I should say lifeWatch at: 18:40 / 19:00twenty life if we get down to zero lifewe lose game overso shock can be used to hit Sparkydirectly or I could use it to hit acreature so I could use it to hitShandra Spitfire here although becausestandard Spitfire has three toughness Iwould not be able to kill with yourshock shock is also an instantwhereas summoning spells and sorceriesWatch at: 19:00 / 19:20which are another type of spell can onlybe cast during your main phase so onyour turn during the main part of yourturn is the only time you can summoncreatures or cast sorceries instance canbe cast at any time including on youropponent's turn including in response tosomething else happening anyway Red'sWatch at: 19:20 / 19:40got a lot of these direct damage spellsblack has a lot of like evil creaturesthat like sacrifice themselves or othersand a lot of spells that directly andimmediately kill another creature bluesgot that sort of counter spell lots ofcard draw manipulation very sorceressgreen is like the deck of big giantWatch at: 19:40 / 20:00stompy creatures Green has a lot ofcards that generate extra mana or maybelet you dig through your deck to findmore land more quickly so that you canput out giant creatures that cost likeeight mana and are just big giant badassstompy things White has I don't know howyou would click qualify white why feelwhite has a lot of themWatch at: 20:00 / 20:20to me thematically white has like a lotof like soldiers and Knights that likework together and defend each other andto end things is the sense I've gotanyway for that anyway it's our turnwe're gonna put another land in here sonow we're up to three mana we don't haveanything to cost three although we dohave some things that cost you and oneumWatch at: 20:20 / 20:40ember hauler also has the ability tosacrifice itself to deal damage to atarget all right here's what we're gonnado I am in my main phase right now I amin the first main phase your turn againstarts with upkeep and draw then goesinto your main phase then there's anattack step and then you go back intoyour main phase and then there's the endphase your end step where you discard ifWatch at: 20:40 / 21:00you have community cards and do othercleanup things what I'm gonna do is I'mgonna skip my first main phase right nowI'm not gonna do anything I'm just gonnahit next what that's gonna do I'm gonnahave all my mana I'm also gonna have allmy cards and the ability to do variousthings so I am now in the the sort ofpre combat step and both players at thispoint having an opportunity to useWatch at: 21:00 / 21:20instant effects so shock whereas most inthe cards no longer glow because they'renot allowed to be used right now shockis going because I can use shock at thistime because it's an instant also I canuse ember haulers ability so emberhauler has an ability on it I pay onemana and sacrifice this card right itblows itself up basically to deal twoWatch at: 21:20 / 21:40damage to any target and this is aninstant effect so I could use this nownote I couldn't attack with ember hauleron the turn where I cast it becausecreatures have summoning sickness on theturn where they come in creatures ofsummoning sickness cannot attack nor canthey use any abilities on their cardthat requires them to tap you I coulduse this ability to sacrifice itself onWatch at: 21:40 / 22:00the turn it put into play because itdoesn't require tap this creature anywayI'm not gonna do anything right now I'mgonna go hit next so now I'm in thedeclare attackers to the phase so I'mgonna declare that I want to attack withthe ember hauler if I click on it I canalso hit the over here I could hit allattack and it will automatically set allmy creatures to attack it still gives meWatch at: 22:00 / 22:20a time to confirm so I can hit allattack and I still have to hit thisbutton to confirm so what you can do ifyou have like 10 creatures out you canhit this button and be like okayeveryone attack oh except you you don'tattack after all and you can pull themback nowunlike other card gamesI do not choose who my creatures attackby default what they're doing is they'reattacking the other player so I'm tryingWatch at: 22:20 / 22:40to attack Sparky here I don't get tochoose to attack Shandra Spitfire butafter I declare my attackers my opponenthas a chance to declare blockers andthat's entirely what Sparky did Sparkyhas declared that Shandra Spitfire willblock the Ember hauler what that's gonnahappen if I were to just if I justWatch at: 22:40 / 23:00continue now and I will in a moment theEmber hauler will deal to damage orShandra spirit and simultaneouslyShandra spear Spitfire will deal onepoint of damage to me neither one of uswill die over here whenever important'sdon't learn comic damage that okaythat's not gonna apply over here neitherone of these creatures will die so letWatch at: 23:00 / 23:20me hit next we'll see the damage ithappens simultaneously some creatureshave first strike that's one of thethings that White has a lot of a lot ofcreatures the first strike first strikeher shoes deal their damage first sofirst try creatures have the potentialto kill an enemy before it hits themback which is kind of nice so both ofthese guys are damaged at the end ofeach turn all creatures healed to fullWatch at: 23:20 / 23:40damage does not persist in Magic theGathering now what I'm gonna do is I'mgonna use my shock spell so I'm gonna doshock deals to damage any target I'mgonna shock the Spitfire to take it outof contention very very niceinstance now here I cast that instancein my main phase I didn't have to do itthen but I want to make sure to shockWatch at: 23:40 / 24:00before the end of the turn so that thething wouldn't heal automatically now Ihave a creature on the board and hedoesn't which is great um let me go andput down the dread Horn arcanist dreadhorror darkness so whenever he attacksI'll be able to cast spells out of mygraveyard which means I will have theWatch at: 24:00 / 24:20opportunity to cast that shock againwhich is kind of nifty oh here's a greattime for it so I didn't draw anothermana but that's okay here's what we'regonna do so this is a 3-2 creature notethat creatures tend have keywords sothis is a human warrior this is a goblinthis is a zombie wizard these arekeywords that by themselves don't doanything but other cards might sayWatch at: 24:20 / 24:40something like all your zombies get +1+1 for example so that would apply to mydreaddarkness so I'm gonna hit next to gointo combat I'm gonna go and declareattackers so I'm gonna declare myattackers here okay I'm just gonna belazy and hit this button and do that nowWatch at: 24:40 / 25:00what's gonna happen is I now have theability to cast because dread DarkNest whenever he attacks I can cast acard from my graveyard as long as it'smana cost is less than or equal to thearcanist power so the arcanist was a 1 3Watch at: 25:00 / 25:20so it has a power of 1 so I can cast theshock and do it for free so I'm gonna dothat and target the Halberdier over heredealing two damage I know that was likepretty crazy a little bit advanced againthe arcanist here is from one of the theexpansions not with a corset theexpansion sets and they tend to do wayWatch at: 25:20 / 25:40crazier things so a little bit morecomplicated if you've never playedbefore but also a sign of like oh youcan do some crazy stuff and magic mmm sothere you go and what's great is I killthat dude before he was able to declarehimself as a blocker cuz here's thething once a creature becomes blockedWatch at: 25:40 / 26:00the creature even if the blocker somehowdies or something before dealing damagethe the blocked creature it still countsas being blocked and they will thereforeand not do damage to the opponent buthere if I go to damage I'll do 3 damageto Sparky here done I still have somemana I may as well put something downgoblin instigator whenever answersWatch at: 26:00 / 26:20battlefield which is the the area overhere create another one one red goblincreature token so you know what I'mgonna do this so that card comes in it'sa 1/1 goblin and it puts in a tokengoblin over here as well I have one manaleft nothing to do with it I will simplyWatch at: 26:20 / 26:40end turn over here well I say nothing todo with it technically I do havesomething because the Ember hauler canuse its ability to commit suicide todeal damage to something it can do thiseven while tapped because tapping isn'tthe cost that's really interestingSparky is usingWatch at: 26:40 / 27:00a spell called command the storm and itwill deal 5 damage to target creaturehe's targeting the ember hauler my emberhauler is going to die as soon ascommand the storm is done resolving buthere's the thing that happens in magicthere is a stack for effects someonecasts a spell or take some sort ofaction or something the other player canWatch at: 27:00 / 27:20then respond to that by casting theirown it has to be instant but castingtheir own instant spell or using aneffect on a creature or something likethatthat happens at instant speed which isby default so command the storm iscurrently on the stack it's sort ofqueued up to happen but it hasn'thappened yetso before command the storm resolvesWatch at: 27:20 / 27:40what I'm destroys a target non-landpermanent so it just picks one thingthat's in play and kills it a permanentit means anything that stays on theboard here so that's creatures landenchantments and artifacts are allpermanence that could be immediatelydestroyed by the golemexcept it doesn't allow you to destroyWatch at: 33:20 / 33:39land in this particular situation so youjust killed one of my creatures straightout mmm I'm gonna put a mountain in andwhat I'm gonna do is I'm going to attackI mean attack with both let's see whathe does all right Sparky has declaredWatch at: 33:39 / 34:00that meteor A video that suggests it’s for complete beginners, and has a dude obviously enjoying demonstrating how much he knows about it, which does nothing but confuse and annoy some kids trying to learn the basics. (We won’t care for the jargon until we understand what it means.)

I got into magic at boy scouts camp and this might be the nerdiest aspect of my life but some of my close friends from that troop and I went to a magic tournament at a comic store that sold magic cards and it was one of the most awesome experiences i have ever had. I suck ass at magic but love it to death

  6. UNSTOPPABLE EROTIC CYCLOPS. I havent played since a few years after the Ice Age expansion was new I believe; its what I remember being advertised when I started (circa '95)…good vid, just downloaded this.

  7. This is great, as I'm about to try out Arena for the first time (having played Magic in different formats throughout the years). As an aside, I think you missed an opportunity to cast Sure Strike on Dreadhorne Archanist BEFORE your creatures attacked so that – with the Archanist suitably buffed up – you could cast Sure Strike a SECOND time (without paying its mana cost) with the graveyard ability; this would have had the added benefit of triggering the Cyclops TWICE, sealing the win.

  9. I know I'm getting here late but I really appreciate how clearly you use key terms and then define them AND THEN show them resolve in play. Specifically your explanation of "the stack" was brilliant. Its a term I've heard before when watching a friend play through a game, but never took the time to figure out exactly what it meant. Gonna give this game a chance I think.
