Watch at: 00:00 / 00:00:20hey there guys so I've got a tutorialhere on how to use the basics of my boxso when you open up the first time itmay come up and ask you to choose likesettings for it you can just click it goahead and to click OK on then thatshould be fine everything is there bydefault and I'll bring you through tothis screen so just to learn the basicsWatch at: 00:20 / 00:40we're just going to use one of the scopemodels that come with my box we're goingto use the t-rex start off with and ifyou click on that that will just open itup for you so just firstly to get usedto the navigation so you can use thescroll wheel to zoom in and out on themouse but everything else requires youWatch at: 00:40 / 01:00to hold down the Alt key so if you holddown Alt + middle Mouse this will panaround your model so you can go up anddown left and right if you hold down theAlt key and the left mouse button thiswill allow you to orbit or spin aroundyour model and if you hold down the Altkey and left mouse this will let youzoom in and out more smoothly thisWatch at: 01:00 / 01:20obviously if you use the middle Mouse itjumps but if you use the right mousebutton and I'll this sort let you movein slowly like so so the shortcutbuttons for the brushes so there's twofactorsthere's the brush size and the brushstrength which you can see just overhere on on the side of the screen soWatch at: 01:20 / 01:40you've got the size of the brush and thestrength of it and you can adjust it byusing these sliders you could type thevalues in or if you like your shortcutsor like to kind of do a little bit morefree flow you hold down B on thekeyboard and you click on the mouse andsort of move it back and forth thisshould adjust the brush size and if youWatch at: 01:40 / 02:00hold down M on the keyboard then you'llbe able to adjust the strength of thisokay so currently the default settingsshould be the mirrors off and then if wego into here and try and apply a sculptas you can see it's doing it but it'squite jagged around the edges that'sbecause as you can see we've got ourwireframe mode on toggle wireframe youWatch at: 02:00 / 02:20press W on the keyboard and switchesbetween the two but as you can see fromthat we've not got very many polygons onhere so it's trying to sculptthese around which is why it's looking alittle bit jagged soon to prove uponthis we need to create more subdivisionsand to do that the shortcut for that isto press Shift + D on the keyboard andWatch at: 02:20 / 02:40as you can see that's brought out uphere to say that we've now got seventhousand two hundred and forty-eightpolygons and you can already see that byadding that it's made our model a littlebit smoother and we've added a lot morepolygons to it so if I try and do it atthis level I'm just going to make mybrush size a little bit smaller you canalso use the square brackets on thekeyboard like so and that will make it aWatch at: 02:40 / 03:00little bit smoother and now anothergreat shortcut is to hold down shift onthe keyboard and that allows you toaccess the smoothing tool used to bethat you have to click on the smoothtool down here and go in and smooth itWatch at: 03:00 / 03:20but now the shortcut is you can justhold down shift and you can adjust itlike so and I'm still not particularlyhappy with the detail so I'm actuallygoing to subdivide this again by postinga shift D and obviously it depends onwhich compute you're on but the higherthe level you go they're more pressurethis puts on your computerand so and obviously the aim of the gameWatch at: 03:20 / 03:40is to try and create the aesthetic stylethat we want and make it look nice anddetailed whilst not using excessiveamount of polygons because that puts alot of pressure on our computer andwhatever we might be using this boy ifwe're using it for a game or somethingit's gonna cause it to go massively slowso we just want to try and keep it aslow as possible but also have as muchWatch at: 03:40 / 04:00detail in here as possible so I'm now onlevel two you can never get up-and-downlevels by pressing page up and page downor you can go into your mesh and you cango step up and step down just here aswell and you can also add yoursubdivisions just here as well if youwanted to okay so with that one therenow I'm just gonna make sure that I addWatch at: 04:00 / 04:20that to it and you can see that's verythin and so I need to mess around withthe actual size there so by pressingcontrols that it can also make you godown the levels as well so just becareful of that so I make sure I'm inthe highest level and that's nice andeven I'm also gonna put the mirroroption on now which I turn off earlierWatch at: 04:20 / 04:40but this now let's just do one thing toone side of the model and it will repeatany other so again too intense so I'mgonna hold down em to bring down thebrush airbrush drink sorry and then Ipress P to bring down that actual brushsize and again to intent so actuallyWatch at: 04:40 / 05:00what I might need to do instead is if Ibring the strength down a bit but thenlift the actual brush size up a littlebit let's see how that does and that's abit better so I mean that this is thething we're working with my box it'svery different from things like the 3dstudio max because it's not aboutspecific measurements or parameters it'svery much it's kind of very similar toWatch at: 05:00 / 05:20things like Photoshop where you know youtry it you draw it in and if it worksfantastic if it doesn't you you got youundo it and you adjust you know yourbrush size or your adjust your pallet orwhatever whatever it is you particularlyworking on that point and so yeah fairlyhappy with that and just gonna bringthat strength up a little bit and bringWatch at: 05:20 / 05:40them out just to make this a little bitthicker yeah perfect so got nice actionwell it turned W off as well just so Ican see it without the wireframe justsee what we got going on cool so we'veestablished that shift allows us tosmooth this out if you feel that thatactually Hong now shift and smoothingout is a little bit too intense and youWatch at: 05:40 / 06:00cannot go over to the smooth tool and atthe moment you can see the strength ofthat is 100% if you move that down tosay something like 50 it will rememberthose settings that so when you go backinto the sculpt and you hold down shiftnow it will smooth out a 50% rather than100% it was there before if you'refinding as I say that the smoothing isit's just moving a little bit too muchthere was almost undoing the work thatWatch at: 06:00 / 06:20you're doing rather than allowing you tokind of smooth in with the edges andthen to invert the sculpt you hold downcontrol and I'm just gonna smooth thatround a bit just there I hold a littlebigger just move it and I'm gonna goafter got another subdivision so I canWatch at: 06:20 / 06:40put the detail on the ice so press shiftD again I'm now on level 3 which is ahundred and fifteen thousand ninehundred and sixty plug on just a veryvery high but we need that so that wecan actually start to bring inthe eye detail so just gonna smooth itoff there and then make some ridges forWatch at: 06:40 / 07:00the eye sections and pull like thereagain using the smooth tool they pullthat strength up a little bitremember the smooth tool is your friendjust to kind of start to get the shape aWatch at: 07:00 / 07:20little bit can experiment with differentthings but to see how they look as wellalways good to do so yeah if you holddown control and you can invert aroundthe section as well and then just smoothWatch at: 07:20 / 07:40it out againsmoothly edges around a little bit ifyou wanted to just to make it a littlebit less jagged cool and you know justobviously the great thing about this isobviously you can just have a bit funwith it as well and no everything has toWatch at: 07:40 / 08:00be perfectly realistic and that'sprobably not a realistic size I we'vegot these fall-off options as well sowe've got some default settings in herein terms of how these might be per tomake kind of like a nose area I'm justgonna turn the shrink down on that turnthe brush size up and then just invertWatch at: 08:00 / 08:20that slightly and then just to make nosebit there cool and then obviously thefall-off sob viously indicator sort ofshape of the brush so to show you hereobviously if you're going to do it likethat and we'll create things like thatbut if I was to do something choose thisfall-off instead it would make aWatch at: 08:20 / 08:40difference where it's more around now soI've just got kind of nubs on the nosetoo just to make it a little bit morescary I guess are you getting that interms of like the muscle we can switchover to the Bulge tool which is usedpredominantly for kind of muscle areasWatch at: 08:40 / 09:00each brush will have it start each toolhave its own sort of brush setting soyou will need to adjust them they willremember which ones your chosen betweenall of them so they won't forget it butjust be aware that you'll have to kindof go in and set things up the thingthat seems to stay consistent though italways remembers that you want mirrorexon which is quite useful and so if Itry this now again it said that workingWatch at: 09:00 / 09:20actually seems to be not too badI might just adjust the strength alittle bit up a tiny bit just get a bitmore definitionso yeah that's fine then smooth all tosmooth off back of the legs in themiddle there just smooth those two bitstogether nothing too intense remember tokeep sort of turning it around becauseobviously it might look okay from oneWatch at: 09:20 / 09:40direction but it might look really sillyfrom another direction so that'sprobably a bit too big wanting to adjustmy brush size down to go down there alittle bitnice just gonna move it off on the sideand anything quite worksmooth first perhaps and then adjustWatch at: 09:40 / 10:00down there yeah looks good better cooland then feel free to the same on thefront of the arm as well just bring thatin I like that nice and then we've gotsome ridges as well that we can smoothin just to make it look a little bitscary on the top perhaps okay so inWatch at: 10:00 / 10:20terms of painting we've got our painttab just up here so we're now scoped atthe moment we go to our paint one and ifwe go to paint tools down here now if Idon't create a new paint layer byclicking on new layer just here if Ijust click on the model it will promptme to create a new plane layer anywayand because it knows there's nothing inWatch at: 10:20 / 10:40theresometimes this by default is set to tipI recommend changing it to PNG justbecause TIFF isn't that recognizedanymore especially things like gameengine so PNG is probably a betterformat to go in and you can choose achannel we're using a deep diffusechannel moment click OK and thendepending what color you've got chosenWatch at: 10:40 / 11:00over here if you click on it pull up thecolor wheel for you so you can choose itwhich one you want you could use like agreen I've got and then you couldpainting it directly or you can scrolldown and you could just get worse as forpainting there okay and then if I goahead and create a new layer above thatone call it maybe detail click OK or hitWatch at: 11:00 / 11:20enter to confirm and then I'll go to theairbrush tool know the passage down outto be about 50% and we've got somestencils that we can use now and forsome reason on my computer the thumbnailpreviews aren't showing but I can assureWatch at: 11:20 / 11:40you they are there and so if they're noton yours like my own for some strangereason you might have to cycle throughfind them that's the one that I won andand so if I click on airbrush again andI'll just make sure I've got like sortof brown berry orange colorWatch at: 11:40 / 12:00that lights maybe there we go and then Ican just paint this on like so I mightneed to adjust that pasty source alittle bit higher there you goactually it works that works where IWatch at: 12:00 / 12:20just adjust a strength instead so Idon't have to go back and change theopacity and then we can just move acrossso I'm just panning across and moving ityou can also you can see here in thecorner you what I'm option is to movethe stencil as well if you know if youwanted to rotate this around or changethe size of the stencil but yeah I'mWatch at: 12:20 / 12:40just painting this on now just to giveit a little bit more texture I don'treally know how realistic this is thisis looking probably not hugely but justto kind of give you an idea about howyou can start sticking this out and youcan use the stencil tools on the scopesas well so you can be sculpting throughWatch at: 12:40 / 13:00this which can lead to quite interestingeffects that the thing is though withthat you need obviously yoursubdivisions to be quite high so it canactually pick up the detail so if that'ssomething that you want to do becauseit's kind of essential to what you'recreating that's finebut I would always recommend if youdon't have to do it that way if you canWatch at: 13:00 / 13:20just do it by painting the detail oninstead then I would try and do that wayinstead again because you having thatsort of higher level it's gonna be a lotof polygons and it's gonna be verycomputationally expensive again so justsomething to consider and there is alsooptions I'm gonna talk I'm not gonna gointo how we do it today but there isoptions as well of if you were going toWatch at: 13:20 / 13:40use the sculpt layer and paint onstencils you and if it was about justactually stenciling on detail ratherthan Clannad what we've been doing herewhat we've been sort of making you knowarms bigger or whatever like that and weif it was if it was just detail we coulduse something called a normal map whichWatch at: 13:40 / 14:00essentially allows you to bake and thedetail from things like your sculpt onto the actual Norma and again I'm notgoing to go into it too much but just tosimply say it's a case of youuse your low-level to your highest levelWatch at: 14:00 / 14:20and what my box does it kind ofseparates the difference and thedifference it then bakes come to an ormap so it's a less computationally heavyway of creating detail but yes for athird time I'm not going to go into howwe do that today but it is an optionthat you haveWatch at: 14:20 / 14:40when sculpting okay so that is prettymuch it guys in terms of how we sculptand paint something in a just the basicsin Mudboxjust to say that if you wanted to add alittle bit more detail to this usingsomething like Photoshop you're a bitWatch at: 14:40 / 15:00more used to you can right click on thelayer and you can go to where it saysexport channel to PSD and that willallow you to just click Save on that wesave it to somewhere like the desktopwherever and we'll open up Photoshop andit will create the actual map for you soWatch at: 15:00 / 15:20there it is you've got different layersin there as well so if I hide there theMudbox base mesh just so you can see howit looks underneath it and that's usefulforests engaging difference this looksnothing like a t-rex but obvious that'sbecause and it's been UV maps and it'sbeen UV mapped because it's one of themon box in house scopes it's one of youWatch at: 15:20 / 15:40know one of the models that comes withit if you were using something likefreeze from your match to generate thebasic shape of the model and thenwanting to put into Mudbox afterwards soyou could start you know adding a littlebit of detail this that will be fine butit's very important that you set up youryou v's before you're putting it intoMudbox otherwise it's gonna it's goingWatch at: 15:40 / 16:00to shout at you a lot it's not gonnawork in the way you want it toespecially when it comes to paintingdetail on so for example you might havelike bits that are overlapping so youmight be painting in one area over hereand it starts painting in a completelydifferent area over there because you'vegot overlapping UVs so just something tobe aware of when making your own modelsand put them into my box and we'veWatch at: 16:00 / 16:19obviously looked at videos beforehand ofhow youwe create movies for models so if youneed some refresher on that go and checkout all the other videos but I thinkwe're done herefor the basics so thank you very
